In addition to cleaning up coal lor use in electric-generating plants, researeh continues for converting coal into useful liquid fuels that cun substitute for petroleum-bused products, demanded largely for transportation and for use as raw materials by the chemical industry. Despite some incidents, the chemical industry presents good accident statistics. A statistical survey of work accidents shows that chemistry is positioned close to the end of the list, classified by order of decreasing lost work days [2] (Table 1.1). Epoxidation processes currently account for around 30 % of H2O2 consumption in the chemical industry. The main commercial source of methane, ethane, and propane is natural gas, which is found ia many areas of the world ia porous reservoirs they are associated either with cmde oil (associated gas) or ia gas reservoirs ia which no oil is present (nonassociated gas). Under low-dose conditions, forest ecosystems act as sinks for atmospheric pollutants and in some instances as sources. As indicated in Chapter 7, the atmosphere, lithosphere, and oceans are involved in cycling carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and other elements through each subsystem with different time scales. Under low-dose conditions, forest and other biomass systems have been utilizing chemical compounds present in the atmosphere and releasing others to the atmosphere for thousands of years. Lead coatings are mainly applied by cladding and find principal use in the chemical industry for resistance to sulphuric acid, for cable sheathing resistant to attack by soils and in architectural applications where resistance to industrial atmospheres is particularly good.
