Chemical Health Safety, description

Exploration activities are potentially damaging to the environment. The cutting down of trees in preparation for an onshore seismic survey may result in severe soil erosion in years to come. Offshore, fragile ecological systems such as reefs can be permanently damaged by spills of crude or mud chemicals. Responsible companies will therefore carry out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) prior to activity planning and draw up contingency plans should an accident occur. In Section 4.0 a more detailed description of health, safety and environmental considerations will be provided. 

Additional Descriptive Issues for a Stand-alone Chapter. Formalizing a ""Chemical Health and Safety chapter would allow increased room to address the issues in Table III. Each topic can be elaborated with specific examples and problems, validating chemical health and safety as a professional chemical science. A large variety of industrial hygiene resources can be sited from this chapter.

The CESARS database contains comprehensive environmental and health information on chemicals. It provides detailed descriptions of chemical toxicity to humans, mammals, aquatic and plant life, as well as data on physical chemical properties, and environmental fate and persistence. Each record consists of chemical identification information and provides descriptive data on up to 23 topic areas, ranging from chemical properties to toxicity to environmental transport and fate. Records are in English. Available online through CCINFOline from the Canadian Centre For Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and Chemical Information System (CIS) on CD-ROM through CCIN-FOdisc. 

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) An MSDS contains descriptive information on hazardous chemicals under OSHA s Hazard Communication Standard. The data sheets also provide precautionary information on safe handling, health effects, chemical and physical properties, emergency phone numbers, and first aid procedures.

The results of analysis were compared with the limits specified in the Commission Regulation (Joint MAFF and Department of Health Food Safety and Standards Group, 1999a,b). For the purposes of the survey, and in line with the usual practice followed by UK enforcement authorities, where samples were found to lie outside the statutory limits, an additional tolerance was added to take account of potential variations in the analytical methodology. The Commission Regulation makes it clear that an oil may not be considered to fit its description if any one of its characteristics lies outside the limits laid down. On this basis, the majority of the oils analysed were found to be correctly described and only four samples were found to exceed European Commission limits for one or more chemical criteria used to distinguish and authenticate the different grades of olive oil. 

This database contains the complete text of over 130,000 Material Safety Data Sheets compiled by the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). This information was gathered from over 500 manufacturers and suppliers in the United States and Canada. Each record covers one chemical substance and provides trade and supplier name, description, chemical/physical properties, reactivity, health hazards, storage and disposal, personal protection, cleanup and disposal, and emergency first aid (CCINFOLINE, STN available on CD from CCOHS). 

Produced by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, containing descriptive, health and precautionary data on pore chemicals, natural substances and chemical mixtures resulting from or used in industrial processes. 

In order to better understand the rather complex procedure for adoption of European exposure limits, a comprehensive description is given below [6-43]. As mentioned above, the SCOEL, which was formed based on a decision of the commission in 1995 [6-44], plays a dominating role. It operates at the request of the European commission and supplies it with proposals, opinions, and advice related to the toxicological evaluation of chemicals and their effects on safety and health. By law, a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) must be published by the manufacturers, importers, or distributors for all materials used in a plant. Any potential health, storage, transportation, and/or handling hazards that could be caused by the material or chemical are shown in the MSDS, along with a description of the seriousness of the hazard. 

In the following paragraphs, the detailed description of the physical and chemical properties, along with the natural occurrence, laboratory and industrial preparation, industrial uses, transport and storage and health and safety of the major commercial gases is provided. Brazier and Ward (2004) have developed a methodology that allows organizations in the chemical and allied industries to evaluate their supervisory arrangements and the subsequent impacts on health and safety. The approach is interview based and uses a series of questions designed to assess the adequacy of an organization s supervisory arrangements (see Section 8.6, Assessment and Evaluation, for a full description of the methodology). 

Description of hazard. Sudden injuries or illnesses, some of which may be life threatening, can occur when employees are exposed to safety or health hazards in hazardous waste operations. Activities where hazardous conditions may exist include cleanup operations, corrective actions, treatment, storage, disposal operations, and emergency response. For instance, as a result of an uncontrolled spill of a toxic water treatment chemical, employees may be exposed to harmful toxins in the air and can suffer significant damage to their health some of it may even be permanent or life threatening.
