Since successful commercialization of Kapton by Du Pont Company in the 1960s (10), numerous compositions of polyimide and various new methods of syntheses have been described in the Hterature (1—5). A successful result for each method depends on the nature of the chemical components involved in the system, including monomers, intermediates, solvents, and the polyimide products, as well as on physical conditions during the synthesis. One of the amenities of present-day organic synthesis is the availability of intermediates from the many chemical supply companies. The extraction of two typical agricultural products from environmental matrices were chosen as examples for the operation of this system. Diuron, a phenylmethylurea, was freshly spiked onto Tama soil. This soil was characterized and shown to have 3.1% organic material and 14 % clay fraction. In addition, a phenyl metabolite of NUSTAR, a systemic fungicide, on wheat previously unextractable by SFE was extracted. The wheat sample was not classified for its chemical composition. Both samples were treated with radiolabeled compounds (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Du Pont Agricultural Products, Wilmington, DE) and extraction results are from liquid scintillation counting of the sample extract. Chemical vapor transport is used to synthesize thin films of materials on a substrate. The film can be the same composition as the substrate or different. In order to proceed with chemical vapor transport, the constituent elements of the compound to be deposited as a thin film must be brought into the vapor phase. Given that many of the thin films of commercial importance involve elements with little or no practical vapor pressure, a lot of attention has been focused on preparing volatile compounds that contain the elements needed in thin-film preparations. Most chemical supply companies carry these compounds as stock items. The major classes of compounds include metal alkyl, metal carbonyl, metal alkoxide, metal 3-diketonates, and organometallics. The analysis for chemical composition of an organically produced oil will be indistinguishable from that of a standard one. They contain the same range of compounds for any given oil. In a standard oil the possibility of trace compounds like pesticide residues is sometimes a cause of concern. The usual GC-MS type of analysis done on essential oils would not show such components. There are specialist companies that provide services to detect for such residues. This worry should be eliminated when buying genuinely produced organic oils. [Pg.126]
