In modem cars, microsensors play an essential and increasingly important role as the interface between the vehicle, with its complex functions of motor management, chassis systems, safety, as well as comfort and convenience on the one hand, and the respective electronic control units on the other hand. Microsensors need to function in a harsh environment over the entire lifetime of an automobile. Therefore reliability aspects have come more and more into the focus of engineering and research activities in microsystem technology. [Pg.204]

It could not be considered, that chassis systems considered as hard real-time, power-train systems as firm real-time and interior system are soft real time systems. ISO 26262 defines the fault-tolerant-time-interval as the basic criterion to specify safety-related timing-specific requirements. This interval defines a period of time, within faults should be controlled by the system (see also Chap. 3 of this book). The consequences of a missing deadline can only be evaluated by the consequences of the fault-error propagation in the latter, consequences of the possible hazard due to resulting malfunctions. [Pg.208]

Many communication systems are ffee-mnning . Mechanisms like lime monitors, message counter provide sufficient evidence that soft deadlines wouldn t violated. In case of hard real-time systems the impact of exceeding a deadline could only lead to a failure of the system. In case of chassis systems a brake demand, a steering intervention or a curve of the road would not detected by the system within a required time-interval, which could lead to a violation of a safety goal or even worst to an accident. [Pg.210]

The approach to simulation model development for an automotive vehicle chassis system, described in this section, has the advantage that the model can be easily extended to include nonlinear tyre and suspension force characteristics without the need to modify the kinematic description of the sprung and unsprung masses. More importantly, the approach facilitates the development of vehicle models which combine a MBS description of the chassis with other vehicle subsystems which are not amenable to MBS modelling techniques, such as the powertrain or a digital control system, but which can be easily represented in a simulation language such as ACSL. [Pg.204]

Container sliips have guides in the hold and on deck which hold boxlike containers or tanks. The tank is latched to a trailer chassis and hauled to shipside. A movable gantiy, sometimes permanently installed on the ship, hoists the tank from the trailer and Towers it into the guides on the ship. This system achieves large savings in labor, but its apphcation is sometimes limited by lack of agreement between ship operators and unions. [Pg.1022]

There are several joint ventures, such as the Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPV) that Ford, Nissan, and VW produce exactly the same vehicle with slight modifications. Ford, Seat, and VW also produce a common MPV and there are several partnerships, such as Rover engines being supplied to Proton, Ford, and Honda. Lada get their chassis from Fiat and their engines from GM. Mitsubishi build the Carisma in Holland in the same plant that Volvo build the S40. The Porche Boxster is assembled in Finland by the same company that assembles the Saab 9-3 cabriolet, and so on. One cannot be sure who owns the company that makes your car, where the components come from, and where it is assembled. What matters is that it meets your needs and expectations and this can only be achieved if there are some common systems in use in each of the countries, so that who owns who and who builds what becomes irrelevant to customer confidence. It is reported that within 20 years there may only be six vehicle manufacturers left in the world. ... [Pg.8]

Intercormection and packaging allow electronic devices to be usefully incorporated into products. The manufactrrre of complex electronic systems reqtrires that htmdreds of thousands of electronic components be efficiently cormected with one another in an extremely small space. In the past, this was accomplished by hand wiring discrete components on a chassis... [Pg.59]

Applications for physical sensors are dominated by the automotive industry. Engines are monitored and controlled by various sensors, and most cars are equipped with systems to enhance safety for brakes, steering, chassis, and even crashes. Controlling airflow and temperature in the cabin enhances the comfort of drivers. [Pg.106]

Power supply capabilities for thermoelectric coolers range from the simple open-loop direct current supply with a switch to sophisticated feedback systems with close temperature regulation and fast response. The only limitation on the supply is that ripple be maintained at a point lower than 10 to 15%. Open-loop systems will generally contain a transformer, rectifiers, choke, and chassis with heat sink for the rectifiers. In feedback systems, a thermistor is used to sense temperature at the cold junction. This signal is compared with the desired temperature setting to obtain an error signal. [Pg.1609]

Phase I—Chassis Dynamometer Tests. A 1.3-L engine equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission and complete drive system was calibrated to meet 1974 emissions standards using Indolene reference fuel. This standardized apparatus was then used in conjunction with the federal emissions test procedure to evaluate the performance of methanol/gasoline blends. Results of the single cylinder test program and preliminary evaluations with the chassis dynamometer system indicated that blends should be limited to 10% methanol or less to avoid drive-ability and other problems. A complete discussion of the apparatus and test procedures is given in Ref. 9. [Pg.258]
