The MARS (Fig. 2.7) has a multimode cavity very similar to that of a domestic oven but tvith safety precautions (15-mL vessels up to 0.5-L round-bottomed flasks, magnetic stirring, temperature control). The microwave power available is 300 W. The optical temperature sensor is immersed in the reaction vessel for rapid response up to 250 °C. Ceiling mounting is available to enable connection with a conventional reflux system located outside the cavity or to facilitate addition of reactants. These ports are provided with a ground choke to prevent microwave leakage. It is also possible to use a turntable for small vessels with volumes from 0.1 mL to 15 mL (120 positions for 15 mL vessels). The Discover system is a new device designed for synthesis. CEM claims a single-mode applicator and focused microwaves. According to technical data the applicator comprises two concentric cavities with an aperture ensuring coupling (Fig. 2.8). [Pg.78]

It has been suggested that the circulating load can be calculated by a material balance from size analyses of the feed, fine product, and coarse product of the classifier in a closed-circuit grinding system [Bond, Rock Prod., 41, 64 (January 1938)]. Typical Mossbauer spectra for the fresh, reduced, carblded and used Fe/ZSM-5 system are shown in a composite Fig. 5. Similar spectra were obtained for the Fe-Co/ZSM-5 system. Additional applications of this technology for rapid lead discovery and lead optimization have been reported [87, 90-93]. It should also be noted that a variety of chemical transformations, in particular in the area of transition-metal catalyzed reactions, have been performed with this or related equipment (Chapt. 11) [25]. Other monomode microwave reactors using related concepts to introduce high-throughput were recently introduced by CEM Corp. (Discover or Explorer line of products, Fig. 12.7.) [81]. A more recently published example of organic microwave synthesis under CF conditions is the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition chemistry in the CEM CF Voyager system (Fig. 11). Savin and coworkers presented the cycloaddition of dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylate with benzyl azide in toluene, which was first carefully optimized with respect to solvent, temperature, and time under batch conditions. The best protocol was then translated to a CF procedure where a 0.33 M solution of both building blocks was pumped through a Kevlar-enforced Teflon coil (10 mL total capacity) heated in the single-mode reactor at 110 °C (10 min residence time) [66]. This method provided a 91% conversion to the desired triazole product (Scheme 12). [Pg.264]

Birds are especially sensitive to biotin deficiency, at least pently because their intestinal flora make little or no contribution to biotin intake. This is of considerable commercial importance with intensively reared poultry. In adult birds, biotin deficiency does not affect egg production, but does reduce the amount of biotin in the eggs, thus impairing embryonic development. Besides performing multiple syntheses in parallel, the accelerating of reaction rates may also achieve the same result— production of multiple peptides in the same time period. CEM (http //www.cem.com) has employed microwave irradiation to shorten both coupling and deprotection times. Their synthesizer, Odyssey (Fig. 7), achieves one cycle of peptide synthesis (Fmoc-based) in less than 10 min and is theoretically capable of the synthesis of 12 peptides in a row. However, for each new peptide the reaction vessel has to be cleaned and new batch of resin has to be transferred into it. As in any electrochemical process, the products to be treated by EDBM must possess a relatively high mineral content to allow a good electrical conductivity to decrease the global resistance of the electrodialysis cell. Moreover, Bazinet et al. [108] demonstrated that the electrical efficiency of skim milk electroacidification is decreased, due to a lack of sufficiently mobile ions such as potassium (Figure 21.17).
