Cast aluminum mold

Different materials can be employed to fabricate the molds such as aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, copper, or nickel. Cast aluminum molds are very common for complex shapes. Electroformed Cu/Ni molds are used for products having extremely fine details and complex shapes and if no parting line is visible. Molds made out of sheets of steel are the cheapest and are used for the production of very big moldings and when no special texture is required. [Pg.495]

These molds can be made from CNC-milled or casted aluminum mold shells (a combination between both methods is possible as well). A mold made from a combined cast aluminum and CNC-milled shells can be manufactured. Semicontinuons ingot casting is primarily employed in the production of cast aluminum. In this process, the molten metal is transferred to a water-cooled permanent mold that has a movable base mounted on a long piston (see Figure 7.3a). As the metal solidifies, the piston is moved downward and more metal continues to fill the reservoir (see Figure 7.3b). Core shakeout is often difficult from aluminum castings. Aluminum is cast at a much lower temperature than iron or steel, 1400°F versus 2500 to 3000°F, and aluminum has a heat content much lower than iron or steel. Slush molding is used mainly with plastisols. It is usually a continuous operation. The mold (female) is filled above a specific pattern mark and passed through an oven that sets or gels the material in contact with the metal mold surface. These molds are electroformed copper or cast aluminum. The material in the center of the mold that is still a fluid is poured out of the mold with the mold returning to an oven for final fusion. Upon removal from the fusion oven, the mold is cooled and the finished product is stripped from the mold. Vacuum or compressed air can be used with large parts or with those of a complex geometry to assist in product removal. Conventional molds, such as plaster-cast aluminum, are satisfactory for ECTFE molding. A comer radius greater than 1.25 cm has been recommended to produce a smooth interior surface and uniform wall thickness.
