Certain casting molds are hardened by spraying with a solution of aluminum chloride before firing. 

The hquid vehicle in a slurry should have a low vapor pressure for Hquid extraction and drying be compatible with the soHds and casting mold be inexpensive and be capable of dissolving and dispersing deflocculants and other additives. Distilled or deionized water is generally used as the Hquid vehicle, however, organic Hquids must be used for such moisture sensitive oxide powders as CaO and MgO, and for oxidation sensitive nonoxide powders, eg, AIN. 

Cast molding is an increasingly used manufacturing process for both rigid gas-permeable and hydrogel contact lenses. In this process, two molds, made from a variety of plastics, are used. A female mold forms the lens front surface (convex) and a male mold forms the lens back surface (concave). The plastic molds are made from metal tools or dies that are usually stainless steel, precision lathed, and polished to the specified lens design. A variety of mold materials are used. The polymerized, hardened lens is released from the mated molds and is processed in much the same way as the spin-cast lenses described above. 

The seal must also resist the vibrations from the explosions of internal combustion in the engine, chassis and wheel vibrations, and even potholes in the road. This seal must resist strong chemicals (anti freeze, anti-rust agents, radiator stop-leak and sealant chemicals, gasoline and lubricant residuals), and also solid particles (rust, iron slag, minerals, asbestos fibers, and silica from the engine casting mold). In spite of all this, the mechanical seal on the water pump of your car can run 7, 10, even 15 years without problems.

Metal molds and cores are used in permanent mold casting. The process works best in continuous operation so that the mold temperature can be maintained within a fixed operating range. The operating temperature of the mold is one of the most important factors in successful permanent mold casting. Mold cavities are machined from solid blocks of graphite. Mold life is the major cost factor in permanent mold casting. 

Foundries purchase new, virgin sand to make casting molds, and the sand is reused numerous times within the foundry. However, heat and mechanical abrasion eventually render the sand unsuitable for use in casting molds, and a portion of the sand is continuously removed and replaced with virgin sand. The removed sand becomes spent foundry sand, which is discarded from the foundry facility. 

In open-mold casting, the shape of the desired object is carved as a "negative" depression or hollow into a suitable bulk of material that withstands the temperature required for the process wood is often used for cold casting molds stone, sand, and dry mud, for hot casting. The fluid casting material is then poured into the carved depression, where it is left to set and from which, when solid, it is finally removed.

Zinc is malleable and can be machined, rolled, die-cast, molded into various forms similar to plastic molding, and formed into rods, tubing, wires, and sheets. It is not magnetic, but it does resist corrosion by forming a hard oxide coating that prevents it from reacting any further with air. To Start the reaction, a very high temperature is needed, for which an ignition mixture has to be used. As the aluminum replaces the iron in the iron oxide, the molten iron produced by the fierce heat pours through a hole in the special container and runs into the casting mold, or into the joint in need of repair.
