These molds can be made from CNC-milled or casted aluminum mold shells (a combination between both methods is possible as well). A mold made from a combined cast aluminum and CNC-milled shells can be manufactured. Large quantities of zinc are used to produce die castings, which are used extensively by the automotive, electrical, and hardware industries. An alloy called Prestal(R), consisting of 78 percent zinc and 22 percent aluminum, is reported to be almost as strong as steel and as easy to mold as plastic. Synthetic Marble. Synthetic marble-like resin products are prepared by casting or molding a highly filled monomer mixture or monomer—polymer symp. When only one smooth surface is required, a continuous casting process using only one endless stainless steel belt can be used (52,53). Typically on the order of 60 wt % inorganic filler is used. The inorganic fillers, such as aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, etc, are selected on the basis of cost, and such properties as the translucence, chemical and water resistance, and ease of subsequent fabrication (54,55). [Pg.265]

Dicyclopentadiene is also polymerized with tungsten-based catalysts. Because the polymerization reaction produces heavily cross-Unked resins, the polymers are manufactured in a reaction injection mol ding (RIM) process, in which all catalyst components and resin modifiers are slurried in two batches of the monomer. The first batch contains the catalyst (a mixture of WCl and WOCl, nonylphenol, acetylacetone, additives, and fillers the second batch contains the co-catalyst (a combination of an alkyl aluminum compound and a Lewis base such as ether), antioxidants, and elastomeric fillers (qv) for better moldabihty (50). Mixing two Uquids in a mold results in a rapid polymerization reaction. Its rate is controlled by the ratio between the co-catalyst and the Lewis base. Depending on the catalyst composition, solidification time of the reaction mixture can vary from two seconds to an hour. Similar catalyst systems are used for polymerization of norbomene and for norbomene copolymerization with ethyhdenenorbomene. [Pg.431]

Rotational Molding. Hodow articles and large, complex shapes are made by rotational mol ding, usuady from polyethylene powder of relatively low viscosity (57—59). The resin is in the form of a fine powder. A measured quantity is placed inside an aluminum mold and the mold is heated in an oven and rotated at low speed. The resin sinters and fuses, coating the inside of the mold. The mold is then cooled by water spray and the part solidifies, dupHcating the inside of the mold. [Pg.143]

Piebaked anodes aie produced by molding petroleum coke and coal tar pitch binder into blocks typically 70 cm x 125 cm x 50 cm, and baking to 1000—1200°C. Petroleum coke is used because of its low impurity (ash) content. The more noble impurities, such as iron and siUcon, deposit in the aluminum whereas less noble ones such as calcium and magnesium, accumulate as fluorides in the bath. Coal-based coke could be used, but extensive and expensive prepurification would be required. Starch monophosphates are quite useful in foods because of their superior freeze—thaw stabiUty. As thickeners in frozen gravy and frozen cream pie preparations, they are preferred to other starches. A pregelatinized starch phosphate has been developed (131) which is dispersible in cold water, for use in instant dessert powders and icings and nonfood uses such as core binders for metal molds, in papermaking to improve fold strength and surface characteristics, as a textile size, in aluminum refining, and as a detergent builder. [Pg.346]

Forming-Die Alloys. The tonnage of slab zinc used in this appHcation is small. The use of zinc alloy dies started in the aircraft industry during World War II (119). Zinc-based alloys cast in sand and plaster molds continue to be used for short-mn dies for steel and aluminum stampings in the automotive and aircraft industries (120).
