Corrosive chemicals and external exposure can cause tank failure. Materials of construction should be chosen so that they are compatible with the chemicals and exposure involved. Welding reduces the corrosion resistance of many alloys, leading to localized attack at the heat-affected zones. This may be prevented by the use of the proper alloys and weld materials, in some cases combined with annealing heat treatment.

At any constant or steady speed of operation of a compressor, the head-capacity and efficiency curves are characteristic of the impeller and casing design only. These curves that are determined by test can be translated to other reasonable speeds and conditions of operation of the wheel-casing combination of the affinity laws. Other potential radiation sensitizers for cervical cancer are being explored in phase I and II trials. Paclitaxel has been combined with cisplatin in several small phase I studies. Pignata et al. (29) found that 50 mg/m2 per week of paclitaxel could be combined with weekly cisplatin (30 mg/m2) and radiation therapy with acceptable toxicity, although 10 of 18 patients in their study had grade 3-4 hematologic toxicity. Chen etal. (30) also were able to give weekly paclitaxel at a dose of 50 mg/m2 (in this case combined with 50 mg/m2 of cisplatin every three weeks) with tolerable toxicity and minimal delay in planned radiation therapy. In both studies, the dose-limiting side effect appeared to be diarrhea. It should be noted that the total dose of cisplatin delivered in these trials was lower than that used in the most successful prospective trials of cisplatin or cisplatin and fluorouracil (Table 3). 

Many adrenomimetic drugs produce responses by interacting with the adrenoceptors on sympathetic effector cells. An examination of Table 9.1 reveals that sympathetic effectors have activity at i-, aj-, Pr, or P2-adrenoreceptors or in some cases, combinations of these adrenoceptors. Combinations should be based on similarity (by region, by country, by type,...). For example, in Depression a trial may be run across many centres with at most ten patients being recruited at each centre some of the centres will be GP centres while others will be specialist psychiatric facilities. In this case combining by centre type (GP or psychiatrist) would make sense and this would allow the homogeneity of treatment effect between GP centres and specialist psychiatric centres to be investigated. 

While it might be anticipated that combination therapy might result in more toxicity, this is often not the case. Combination therapy for patients not responding adequately to monotherapy is becoming the rule in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. 

Anabolic steroids are also still used in refractory anemias, although with recombinant human erythropoietin now widely available they appear to be seen mainly as a means of increasing the response to erythropoietin in highly resistant cases combination treatment with erythropoietin, a glucocorticoid, and nandrolone has also been recommended for treating myelodysplastic syndromes (13). Again, in such exceptional situations the risks of anabolic steroids have to be accepted. 

This subject has been reviewed in relation to combined oral therapy. In a systematic review of 63 studies with a duration of at least 3 months and involving at least 10 patients at the end of the study, and in which HbAlc was reported, five different classes of oral drugs were almost equally effective in lowering blood glucose concentrations (13). HbAic was reduced by about 1-2% in all cases. Combination therapy gave additive effects. However, long-term vascular risk reduction was demonstrated only with sulfonylureas and metformin.

Another simple type of grain boundary is the twist boundary, where the lattice planes of the grains are rotated relative to each other. In this case the interface consists of a cross grid of screw dislocations. In the more general case, combinations of these two simple types of dislocation will occur. 

It should be emphasized that in all these cases, combined or superimposed phenomena must be dealt with, viz. for stage IV, fluiddynamics, kinetics of polymerization, and rheokinetic changes caused by chemical reactions for stage V, polymerization kinetics, crystallization kinetics and heat transfer effects a thermomechanical problem in combination with crystallization kinetics.
