The F/B of (a) decreases about 1 8dB in the maximum as the axial compressive stress is loaded, and is constant during an... [Pg.851]

Resistance to axial compressive deformation is another interesting property of the silk fibers. Based on microscopic evaluations of knotted single fibers, no evidence of kink-band failure on the compressive side of a knot curve has been observed (33,35). Synthetic high performance fibers fail by this mode even at relatively low strain levels. This is a principal limitation of synthetic fibers in some stmctural appHcations. [Pg.78]

Expansion strains may be taken up in three ways by bending, by torsion, or by axial compression. In the first two cases maximum stress occurs at the extreme fibers of the cross section at the critical location. In the third case the entire cross-sectional area over the entire length is for practical purposes equally stressed. [Pg.987]

A polypropylene bar with a square section (10 mm x 10 mm) is 225 mm long. It is pinned at both ends and an axial compressive load of 140 N is applied. How long would it be before buckling would occur. The relationship between the buckling load, Fc, and the bar geometry is... [Pg.159]

Dopamine /3-hydroxylase (D/3H) is a copper-containing glycoprotein that hydroxylates dopamine at the benzylic position to norepinephrine.84 During the attempted crystallization of the bis(hydroxide)-bridged dicopper(II) dimer, a side product was subsequently isolated (complex (63)), revealing intramolecular hydroxylation at a formally benzylic position of the tris(imidazo-lyl)phosphine ligand.85 The copper(II) center has an axially compressed TBP structure. [Pg.759]

The failure mechanisms of interest in reinforced masonry wall elements include flexural, transverse shear, in-plane shear and in some cases, combined axial compression and flexure. Buckling failure modes of compression elements and connection failures are to be avoided. [Pg.58]
