Heat reagent-grade material for 1 hr at 255-265°C. Cool in an efficient desiccator. Titrate sample with acid to pH 4-5 (first green tint of bromocresol green), boil the solution to eliminate the carbon dioxide, cool, and again titrate to pH 4-5. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, magnesium hydroxide absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide. Reactive grades are converted to the basic carbonate 5MgO 4CO2 XH20 over a period of several years. Grades that resist carbonization at high temperature and humidity have been reported (71). [Pg.345]

Semiconductors. Phosphine is commonly used in the electronics industry as an -type dopant for siUcon semiconductors (6), and to a lesser extent for the preparation of gaUium—indium—phosphide devices (7). For these end uses, high purity, electronic-grade phosphine is required normally >99.999% pure. The main impurities that occur in phosphine manufactured by the acid process are nitrogen [7727-37-9] hydrogen [1333-74-0] arsine [7784-42-17, carbon dioxide [124-38-9], oxygen [7782-44-7], methane [74-82-8], carbon monoxide [630-08-0], and water [7732-42-1]. Phosphine is purified by distillation under pressure to reduce the level of these compounds to <1 ppm by volume. The final product is sold as CYPURE (Cytec Canada Inc.) phosphine. [Pg.318]

Excess calcium hydroxide is precipitated by usiag carbon dioxide and the calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, and calcium phosphite are removed by filtration. The filtered solution is treated with an equivalent amount of sodium sulfate or sodium carbonate to precipitate calcium sulfate or carbonate. Sodium hypophosphite monohydrate [10039-56-2] is recovered upon concentration of the solution. Phosphinic acid is produced from the sodium salt by ion exchange (qv). The acid is sold as a 50 wt %, 30—32 wt %, or 10 wt % solution. The 30—32 wt % solution is sold as USP grade (Table 12) (63). Phosphinic acid and its salts are strong reduciag agents, especially ia alkaline solution (65). [Pg.375]

An additional mole of ammonium sulfate per mole of final lactam is generated duting the manufacture of hydroxylamine sulfate [10039-54-0] via the Raschig process, which converts ammonia, air, water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide to the hydroxylamine salt. Thus, a minimum of two moles of ammonium sulfate is produced per mole of lactam, but commercial processes can approach twice that amount. The DSM/Stamicarbon HPO process, which uses hydroxylamine phosphate [19098-16-9] ia a recycled phosphate buffer, can reduce the amount to less than two moles per mole of lactam. Ammonium sulfate is sold as a fertilizer. However, because H2SO4 is released and acidifies the soil as the salt decomposes, it is alow grade fertilizer, and contributes only marginally to the economics of the process (145,146) (see Caprolactam). [Pg.234]

Ammonium bicarbonate is produced as both food and standard grade and the available products are normally very pure. Although purification is possible by sublimation at low temperatures, it is more economical to prepare the desired product directiy by using ammonia and carbon dioxide of high purity. [Pg.363]

Essentially no waste products are formed ia the USP process if hydriodic acid and either sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate are used as reactants. Water results from use of the former a mole equivalent quantity of carbon dioxide is produced from the latter reagents. Higher quaUty grades may require some purification steps which may result ia wastes from the treatment. Disposal of these impurities must then be carried out. [Pg.190]

A convenient method for assessing the extent of surface oxidation is the measurement of volatile content. This standard method measures the weight loss of the evolved gases on heating up to 950°C in an inert atmosphere. The composition of these gases consists of three principal components hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The volatile content of normal furnace blacks is under 1.5%, and the volatile content of oxidized special grades is 2.0 to 9.5%. [Pg.543]

Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide [124-38-9] provides soft drinks with a pungent taste, acidic bite, and sparkling fizz. Carbon dioxide (qv) also acts as a preservative against yeast, mold, and bacteria. The carbon dioxide used ia soft drinks must be food-grade and free of impurities that may affect the taste or odor of the final product. [Pg.13]
