Phenol (C5H5OH) or carboUc acid is an aromatic hydrocarbon derived originally from coal tar, but prepared synthetically in a process that utilizes monochlorobenzene as a starting point. Ninety-eight percent phenol appears as transparent crystals, while liquefied phenol consists of 88% USP solution of phenol in water. 

Iodine displacement titrations are used in pharmacopoeial assays of liquefied phenol, methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate and phenidione.

Phenol (Tris-saturated)—Add 500 ml of liquefied phenol to 500 ml of 0.5 M Tris HC1, pH 8.0. Gently but thoroughly mix the solution for 15 min. Allow the two phases to separate, and aspirate off as much of the aqueous (upper) phase as possible. Repeat this extraction two more times with (500 ml per extraction) with 100 mM Tris HC1, pH 8.0. After the final extraction, leave a sufficient layer of Tris HC1, pH 8.0, over the equilibrated phenol. Store this solution in a tightly capped dark bottle at 4°C (stable for several weeks). 

Appearance liquefied phenol is phenol maintained as a liquid by the presence of approximately 10% water. It is a colorless liquid, with a characteristic aromatic odor, which may develop a red coloration on exposure to air and light. Specific gravity 1.065 at 25°C... 

Comments liquefied phenol is often more convenient to use in a formulation than the crystalline form. However, liquefied phenol should not be used with fixed or mineral oils, although the crystalline solid may be used. Caution should be observed when handling liquified phenol to avoid contact with skin, as this could cause serious burns. 

Sodium Borate Solution Compound. Dobell s soln. Made from 1.5 g sodium borate. 1.5 g sodium bicarbonate, 0.3 ml liquefied phenol, 3.5 ml glycerol and water to make 100 ml.
