Aromatic alcohols are called phenols. The word phenol comes from phenyl alcohol. Phenol itself, formerly known as carbolic acid, finds application as a preservative. Three example phenols are illustrated in Figure 11.23. Hexachlo-rophene, a phenolic aryl halide, was once a common active ingredient in over-the-counter antibacterial soaps. [Pg.294]

Zeolite beta has also been used for the racemization of secondary phenylic alcohols in a dynamic kinetic resolution however, in this case water elimination/ addition via a carbenium ion is involved rather than a redox mechanism [75, 76]. [Pg.331]

Phcnylsulfuric acid is monobasic like ethylsulfuric acid the rule leads to this conclusion if one considers carbolic acid [phenol] as neutral, as phenyl alcohol, if one assumes its basicity to be zero, as in alcohol. [Pg.109]

The retention characteristics of over 40 small polar molecules (phenols, phenyl alcohols, imines, phenylcarboxylic acids, phenyl esters, phenyl. ethers, phenyl ketones, nitro- and cyanophenols) were studied on C4 and C g stationary phases [117]. Experimental results explain the advantages of methanol over other organic mobile phase components (e.g., acetonitrile) in the separation of aliphatic alcohols, phenols, and carboxylic acids. Methanol, through its reciprocal hydrogen bond donor/acceptor character forms stable complexes with these solutes in the stationary phase, giving enhanced selectivity for these solute types. The k values for these 40 solutes are tabulated for 20/80, 25/75, and 50/50 methanol/water mobile phases. [Pg.87]

Forty percent of 2-phenyl alcohol was also obtained. [Pg.171]

To acetonitrile was added periodic acid and this mixture was stirred at r.t. for 15 min. Dichlorofluoromethyl 4-methoxy-phenyl alcohol was added followed by addition of pyridinium chlorochromate in acetonitrile, then the reaction mixture was stirred at 0°, for 10 min and at r.t. for 2.5 h (62%) [6087]. [Pg.1668]

Alcohols are organic compounds that have a functional hydroxyl group attached to a carbon atom of an alkyl chain. Benzene hydroxyl derivatives and aromatic hydrocarbons are called phenols, and the hydroxyl group is directly attached to a carbon atom in the benzene ring. In this case, phenol is an alcohol but not an alkyl alcohol the group QH5- is named phenyl but the CsHsOH compound is called phenol and not phenylic alcohol. [Pg.14]
