Camera lenses

The high index of refraction and dispersion properties of its oxide s have made germanium useful as a component of wide-angle camera lenses and microscope objectives. 

Photochromic lenses for eyewear serve as variable density optical filters. Other appHcations for photochromic light filters have been proposed including gla2ing appHcations for solar attenuation, variable transmission camera lenses, and shields for protection against the light flash from a nuclear explosion. 

Those with transparency capabilities provide many different products that include toys, protective shields (high heat resistance, gunfire, etc.), transportation vehicle lighting, camera lenses, eyeglasses, contact lenses, etc. When transparency is needed in conjunction with toughness, plastic materials are the preferred candidates. Add to the capability of providing simple to very complex shapes.

Highly pure lanthanum oxide is used to make optical glass of high refractive index for camera lenses. It also is used to make glass fibers. The oxide also is used to improve thermal and electrical properties of barium and strontium titanates. Other applications are in glass polishes carbon arc electrodes fluorescent type phosphors and as a diluent for nuclear fuels. In such apph-cations, lanthinum oxide is usually combined with other rare earth oxides.

At TANCO in Bernic Lake, Manitoba, miners are busy finding and processing two rare and very different metallic elements tantalum and cesium. Both of these metals are important parts of high-tech applications around the world. They are used in nuclear reactors and as parts of aircraft, missiles, camera lenses, and surgical instruments like the one shown above. 

Tantalum is resistant to corrosion because a thin film of tantalum oxide forms when tantalum is exposed to oxygen. The metal oxide acts as a protective layer. The oxide also has special refractive properties that make it ideal for use in camera lenses. 

Lanthanum has been used extensively in camera lenses to give high refractive indices with low dispersion. Cerium oxide absorbs UV light strongly and hence prevents degradation of pigments. 

OTHER COMMENTS used as an ablative material (i.e., any material that posses a capability for rapidly dissipating heat from a substrate) in rocket engines, spacecraft, etc. also used as fibers in reinforced plastics used in special camera lenses.
