Tetramethylethylene behaves in the AlCIs-catalyzed diacetylation as 155 (Aik = iso-Pr)affording2,6-dimethyl-4-isopropylpyrylium. Although the olefin acylation had been investigated by many chemists beginning with Kondakov (cf. Nenitzescu and Balaban and Balaban and Nenitzescu ), the formation of pyrylium salts had escaped notice because they are water-soluble and had been discarded after hydrolysis of the reaction mixture. Only in the study of the ZnCla-catalyzed acetylation of diisobutene had a crystalline product been observed by Byrns and Doumani its reaction... [Pg.317]

In contrast to the uncertainty with respect to monkeys, the situation in respect of great apes (or at least chimpanzees) is more clear cut. Chimpanzees emerged as the most frequent users of tactical deception in Byrne s (1995) analysis. In addition, evidence from experimental studies by Povinelli et al. (1990) and O Connell (1996) provide convincing evidence that these great apes at least do possess formal theory of mind. Children are not born with a theory of mind ability, but acquire it at about the age of 4 years (Astington 1994). Some individuals (whom we label autistic) never develop this ability (Leslie 1987, Happe 1994). O Connell (1996) devised a mechanical analogue of the standard false belief test which she applied to chimpanzees as well as normal children and autistic adults. Her results demonstrate rather clearly that chimps do better than autistic adults and about as well as 4-year-old children on the same test. In other words, chimps perform about as well as children who have just acquired basic theory of mind. [Pg.81]

A larger set of placebo-controlled studies show conclusively that imipramine is also effective for the treatment of panic disorders. Other agents shown to be effective in panic disorders include the SSRIs paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine and citalopram. Generally, initial treatment of moderate to severe panic disorders may require the initiation of a short course of benzodiazepines e.g. clonazepam (0.5 1 mg twice daily), and an SSRI. The patient will obtain immediate relief from panic attacks with the benzodiazepine whereas the SSRI may take 1 6 weeks to become effective. Once a patient is relieved of initial panic attacks, clonazepam should be tapered and discontinued over several weeks and SSRI therapy continued thereafter. There are no pharmacological treatments available for specific phobias, however controlled trials have shown efficacy for several agents, e.g. phenelzine, moclobemide. clonazepam, alprazolam, fluvoxamine. sertraline and paroxetine in the treatment of social phobia (Roy-Byrne and Cowlev, 2002). [Pg.293]

Other additional studies or pertinent information that lend support to this MRL It is well documented in intermediate-duration studies that the thyroid is a target of PBBs showing a spectrum of effects, including decreases in serum T3 and T4 hormone, thyroid enlargement, effects in the follicular cells (e.g., reduced size, hyperplasia with columnar appearance, and papillary projections) and accumulation of colloid droplets (Akoso et al. 1982 Byrne et al. 1987 Gupta and Moore 1979 Kasza et al. 1978 Norris et al. 1975 NTP 1983 Sepkovic and Byrne 1984 Sleight et al. 1978). [Pg.472]

In 1943, A. C. Byrns et al. (7), of Union Oil of California published the first study showing under semi-industrial conditions the relative activities of Mo03 and CoO and the mechanical mixture of these two oxides, which they compared to C0M0O4 supported on bentonite. These authors demonstrated that a mixture of molybdenum and cobalt in their oxidic state should be chemically associated in order to be very active, while the simple mechanical mixture only showed the additive activities of the individual oxides. However, these authors mainly emphasized the behavior of these catalysts under different industrial conditions and reduced their discussion of catalyst structure and characterization to a few lines of speculation. [Pg.180]

The enzyme has been reviewed briefly by Byrne in the preceding edition of The Enzymes (1) and elsewhere (2) it has also been reviewed by Manners (3), and by Swanson (4) and Nordlie and Arion (5) in two volumes of Methods in Enzymology. The roles played by hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase in regulating carbohydrate metabolism have been described in excellent reviews by Cahill et al. (0) and by Ashmore and Weber (7). The latter work also contains a comprehensive review of catalytic properties of the phosphohydrolase activity of the enzyme covering studies carried out prior to 1958. Glucose-6-phosphatase, along with a number of other enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, has also been reviewed in Japanese (8). [Pg.544]

These original studies on the possible roles of phospholipids in glucose-6-P phosphohydrolase activity have been extended by Byrne and co-workers (81, 84-87), and comparative studies of the effects of phospholipase treatment and phospholipid supplementation on both phosphohydrolase and phosphotransferase activities of the rat-liver enzyme have been carried out by Snoke and Nordlie (82, 83). [Pg.555]

We wish to thank H. Byrne, G. B. Fincher, and D. P. S. Verma for help and advice in carrying out and interpreting the results described here. The studies were financed by grants (to G.A.M.) from the National Research Council of Canada and the Quebec Ministry of Education, and a scholarship (to Y.-S. W.) from McGill University. [Pg.355]
