Burnt soil

It is unlikely that the enhanced susceptibility of the Bone Chamber samples could reflect a source as a burnt soil. Although such burnt soils have been shown to have susceptibilities ranging as high as 9000 x 10 m kg (Dearing, 1999), they frequently contain maghemite (see Thompson and Oldfield, 1986, for a discussion), and would be expected to show other indications of burning, such as fragments of charcoal or baked clays. These were not observed in either the Bone Chamber or Reed Chamber samples. [Pg.64]

The soil and sediment samples analysed in this study were taken between 1981 and 1985. Sediment samples were taken from the recreational lakes and river systems withui the study area using sediment grabs lowered from small boats. The sediments were collected from the top few cm, which represent the newly deposited oxidised layer, and subsec[uently air-dried in a clean-air chamber. To soil samples taken were burnt soils and roadside soils from several locations in the city area. [Pg.75]

Special pumps are used for removing crude oil from the surface of the soil. Then, the surface of the soil must be collected and utilized or disposed of. In very rare cases where the crude oil contamination penetrates very deep into the soil layer, typically over ten meters, it becomes necessary to completely burn the soil layer. In the direct drilling (no-till seeding) practice in the united Kingdom/ straw residues from the preceding crop are usually burnt because poor crop establishment and yields can result/ particularly on heavy soils in wet years (10). In addition to recycling (e. g. composting) or waste clearance (e. g. contaminated soils), particular importance is attached to effluent treatment, because of its high cost to the taxpayer. Waste water treatment produces large quantities of solid residue that are burnt or biologically treated. There are a number of established processes, subject to debate according to local conditions.
