Building the access road

Clearing and leveling the site often takes place at the same time as building the access road. The same types of equipment are used (bulldozers, excavators, and compaction equipment). When leveling the site, it is important to know the location of buried pipeline and cables so they are not damaged. The contractor needs to contact local utility companies to have them determine if there are any hazards. 

All successful oil and gas extraction work begins with proper site preparation, such as building the access road, leveling the site, ensuring the ground is stable, and digging the necessary trenches and excavations. Remember to take critical precautions when drilling... 

Once the site is selected, the land purchase must be made. Usually a third party such as a real estate agent is employed to do this work. It is advisable first to secure an option to buy the land so that all of the potential problems can be evaluated or solved before the purchase is made. Other negotiations besides the purchase or lease of the site also need to be negotiated. Zoning, easement, building costs, access roads, taxes, and the like need to be settled before the land is purchased. It is best to keep the identity of the purchaser secret while all this is being handled. Contact between the plant owner and utilities, railroads, pipelines, and the local community need to be finalized in writing before a final purchase.

The access road is needed to get from the public road to the drilling rig pad. This road could be very short or it could be miles long. Bulldozers, excavators, and compaction equipment are often used to build the road. Operating these types of heavy equipment is not without risks. Your employer must allow only those workers qualified by training or experience to operate equipment and machinery. 

Onshore processing facilities, and modules brought onshore, have to be cleaned of all hazardous compounds and scrapped. Cellars of single wells, drilling pads, access roads and buildings will have to be removed. If reservoir compaction affects the surface area above the abandoned field future land use may be prevented, in particular in coastal or low land environments. 

The siting of the main process units will determine the layout of the plant roads, pipe alleys and drains. Access roads will be needed to each building for construction, and for operation and maintenance. 

Preplans are similar to floor plans except they will often show features on the outside of the building in addition to the floor plan, although they may have somewhat less detail on the interior of the building. Preplans are frequently made for businesses, churches, and similar types of commercial buildings. These plans are often carried on the trucks for reference by the crews at an incident. A preplan may include information on access roads around the building, connections to sprinkler systems, location of gas or bulk material storage, locations of fire hydrants, information on alarm systems in the building, and other critical information for the crews. 

The actual site requirements will be greater than the value computed because additional land is required for a buffer zone, office and service building, access roads, utility access, and so on. Typically, this allowance varies from 20 to 40%. Thus, if an allowance of 30% is employed, the daily area requirement becomes... 

Radiological Hazards. Adversaries and even terrorist could spread radioactive material in an effort to deny US forces access to key terrain, roads, and buildings. The use of radiation dispersal devices and destruction of local nuclear reactors by terrorists are examples of radiological threats. Other radiological hazards present during deployments may include improperly dumped waste and accidents involving radioactive commodities. 

Other injuries in the parking lot or access road are work-related and potentially recordable. Company parking lots are part of the work environment because the employee is present as a condition of employment. If an employee is injured by slipping on ice or tripping in a pothole while walking from car to building, it would be recordable. 

After contraa award, the proposal plot plan is updated to suit the latest information and is reviewed and approved by the client. This document becomes the basis for the plant layout phase of the projea and is called the planning plot plan. A sample planning plot plan is shown in Exhibit 3-2. On completion of the plant layout phase—when all the equipment has been sized and is in the best position to suit the projea requirements and when all access roads, buildings, and pipe tacks have been located—the plot plan is finally issued for construction. Ihis is illustrated in Exhibit 3-3 as the construaion plot plan. 

The transformer area is located immediately adjacent to the turbine building. The unit auxiliary transformers, the reserve auxiliary transformers, and the main step-up transformers are located in the transformer area. The main switchyard area and the rail and road access to the site are site specific. 

Old stores, especially those occupying valuable land in city centres, were built several stories high. Access was by lifts and most of the handling was by hand or with hand pallet trucks. Such stores are occasionally built today, but the general use of mechanical handling has led to the single-storey building close by a main road but away from a city centre.
