Development of modular self-assembling biomaterials is an attempt to harness the cell as the master-builder of its own extracellular matrix using tailored synthetic components. Gantrez AN resins have been suggested as a replacement for sodium tripolyphosphate and other phosphates commonly used as detergent builders.The copolymers also function very well as stabilizer additives for heavy-duty liquid detergent formulations and as deflocculants for hard water detergents. As polymeric additives, these resins prevent scale formation or precipitation of alkaline hardness salts from saline waters. If such uses could be fully developed, a substantial market for Gantrez resins could be realized. However, lack of biodegradability and economic considerations would appear to preclude this future. 

We need a reliable method of defining the functional relationships between inputs and outputs in the SIS. Usually we have to circulate the information among many parties and it has to be available at the plant for use in operations, training and in future studies. Whilst many companies will define their requirements by a narrative description there are benefits to be foimd in supporting the narrative with graphical description methods.
