There are a variety of chemicals that are toxic and used in the drilling fluid makeup. Chromates and asbestos were once commonly used and are now off the market. A mud inventory should be kept for all drilling additives. Included in the inventory are the material safety data sheets (MSDS) that describe each material s pertinent characteristics. The chemicals found on the MSDS sheet should be compared with the priority pollutants and any material should be eliminated if a match is found. The chemicals should also be checked on arrival for breakage and returned to the vendor if defective packaging is found. All mud additives should be housed in a dry area and properly cared for to prevent waste. Chemicals should always be mixed in packaged proportions. Wasted chemicals, ejected to the reserve pit by untrained personnel, can present future liabilities to the operator. 

Oceans occupy 70.8% or 125 million square miles of the surface of the earth. Within or beneath this inner space are foods, fuels, and minerals. Thus interest in the sea is obvious. At least 4/5 of all life on earth exists in saltwater. It is predicted that of the oil and gas demand in future years will come from oil at 2,000 ft. depths operated by manned submarines and marine robots. The appearance of expert systems to solve practical problems, also in chemistry, started in the eighties. During this period much experience has been acquired through the expected and unexpected problems that arose during such projects. Until now there are only a few commercially available expert systems and this is not likely to change in the near future. This implies that expert systems will be mostly in-house developments. Anyone who has remodeled a house is very aware of this. Consider the example of a man who builds a house and doesn t have the capital to include a second bath. He realizes, however, that when his children become teen-agers he will definitely need another one. Therefore, if he is wise he will design the house so that there is space for another bath. He will also make sure that the hot and cold water lines, a drain, and a stack that can service the second bath are installed. These provisions for the future will only increase the cost of the house slightly. Then five years later when he installs the second bath he merely needs to buy the fixtures and attach them to the installed plumbing.
