Buckling stability

The analysis methods used in the design process make use of hand computations, three dimensional structural analysis software, STAAD Pro (2009) and spreadsheets. The structural analysis software is required to be capable of conducting static linear elastic analysis, non-linear second order analysis, buckling/stability, and modal (frequency) analysis. The steps and procedures used for preliminary design, detailed analysis, and member optimization, are described in the following sections.

In actual practice, it is seldom necessary to go through the Iowa equation calculation, for if the recommended installation practices in D 2321 are followed, initial installed deflections can quite readily be held to approximately 5 percent and less. Burial of the thinner-waUed, more flexible pipes may also require consideration of the adequacy of the pipe s wall compressive strength as well as its buckling stability (Fig. 5.166). 

If the mass-related strength Rm is included into the ratio of permissible stress, aluminum material is superior to its steel partners. Weight savings in proportion to the density of steel are possible but practical only if the strength can be calculated. If elastic deformations (bending) or buckling stability have to be taken into account, the modulus of elasticity (70,000 N/mm ) influences the calculation significantly.

A comprehensive list of behavioral phenomena and physical attributes affecting the strength and stability of steel frames is compiled in White 1991. Some of the items listed include initial imperfections, residual stresses, initial strains, construction sequence, effects of simultaneous axial force, shear and moment on section capacities, P-dclta effect, local buckling and spread of inelastic zones in members.
