The most surprising observations on Table II are the lack of a clear relationship between meat use and risk of fatal cancers of the large bowel and breast. Evidence from several other studies suggests that a direct positive association should be evident (10). However, data from a growing number of recent studies are not consistent with an association between meat use and risk of large bowel cancer or breast cancer (17-19). Meat use is also unrelated to all types of cancer combined. [Pg.171]

Unfortunately, the questionnaire did not distinguish between caffeinated versus decaffeinated coffee or instant versus brewed coffee. Positive associations with coffee use are seen for fatal large bowel cancer in both sexes, fatal coronary disease in males only, and possibly for all causes of death in males only. Both sexes were combined for large bowel cancer because the degree of association was essentially equivalent when examined separately for... [Pg.172]

Compared to the general population, Adventists have an exceptionally low risk of fatal lung cancer and other diseases which are strongly related to cigarette or alcohol use. They also appear to have a marked reduction in risk of death from large bowel cancer, coronary disease, stroke, diabetes, and nontraffic accidents. [Pg.176]

Coffee use among Adventists is moderately related to risk of death from large bowel cancer in both sexes, as well as coronary disease and all causes in males. [Pg.176]

Cancer. Studies found no relationship between endogenous p-cresol levels in the urine and the occurrence of large bowel cancer (Bone et al. 1976) or bladder cancer (Renwick et al. 1988) in humans. There are no data available regarding the carcinogenicity of exogenous cresols in humans. No cancer bioassays have been conducted in animals, but the results of a promotion study in mice suggested that cresols can be cancer promoters. Cresols have some ability to interact with mammalian DNA in vitro, but it is impossible to assess the potential hazard to humans without more information. [Pg.61]

Fibre drinks, containing both soluble and insoluble fibres (non-starch polysaccharides). These drinks add bulk to the diet and increase stool weight (a low stool weight is associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer and gall stones). Fibre also binds cholesterol (a risk factor for heart disease), thus reducing its adsorption from the intestine. To support a claim, the quantity of drink consumed in a day must provide at least 3 g of fibre, i.e. one-sixth of the recommended daily allowance of 18 g. [Pg.361]

We will focus on cancer of the large bowel, rather than on revealing fragments of information on all of the major types of cancers. The incidence of cancer of the large bowel (colon and rectum) in the United States is 136,000 cases per year, while the incidence of death from colorectal cancer is about 55,000 per year (Lewis, 1996). Large bowel cancer develops with the appearance of a distinct number of genetic mutations, as do all other types of cancers. In the case of cancers of colorectal cancer, the steps tend to follow this progression ... [Pg.882]

Chronic administration increases the incidence of cholesterolic gallstones twofold. It also causes a small increase in thromboembolic phenomenon, pulmonary embolism, intermittent claudication, and angina pectoris. The drug may increase the incidence of bowel cancer. Overall, clofibrate cannot be classified as carcinogenic in humans. [Pg.623]
