Stem Cell Transplant. Stem cells can be found in either the bone marrow or the peripheral circulating blood. They also can be found in umbilical cord blood and fetal marrow and liver. Before stem cells can be harvested from a donor, mobilization of stem cells into the peripheral blood is stimulated by the use of cytokines. A process called apheresis is used to collect the stem cells from the donor s blood. These harvested stem cells are then injected into the patient. As with a bone marrow transplant, it is also possible to perform an autologous stem cell transplant. The transplanted patient will usually begin to produce new blood cells ten to twenty-one days after receiving the harvested stem cells. [Pg.956]

Administration of trimethadione (Tridione) may result in hematologic changes, such as pancytopenia (decrease in all the cellular components of the blood), leukopenia, aplastic anemia, and thrombocytopenia Also reported are various types of skin rashes, diplopia (double vision), vomiting, changes in blood pressure, CNS depression, photosensitivity, and fatal nephrosis. Because these dm have been associated with serious adverse reactions and fetal malformations, they should be used only when other less toxic dm are not effective in controlling seizures. The oxazolidinediones may precipitate a tonic-clonic seizure... [Pg.257]

The quantity P50, a measure of O2 concentration, is the partial pressure of Oj that half-saturates a given hemoglobin. Depending on the organism, P50 can vary widely, but in all instances it will exceed the PO2 of the peripheral tissues. For example, values of P50 for HbA and fetal HbF are 26 and 20 mm Hg, respectively. In the placenta, this difference enables HbF to extract oxygen from the HbA in the mother s blood. However, HbF is suboptimal postpartum since its high affinity for O2 dictates that it can deliver less Oj to the tissues. [Pg.42]

In rat blood and in the cell culture medium RPMI 1640 (+15% fetal calf serum) oxaliplatin (4) forms the major biotransformation products [Pt(dach)Cl2], [Pt(dach)(H20)Cl]+ (only in plasma ultrafiltrate), and [Pt(dach)(methionine)]+ (91). [Pg.199]

Ergot alkaloids contain lysergic acid (formula in A shows an amide). They act on uterine and vascular muscle. Ergo-metrine particularly stimulates the uterus. It readily induces a tonic contraction of the myometrium (tetanus uteri). This jeopardizes placental blood flow and fetal O2 supply. The semisynthetic derivative methylergometrine is therefore used only after delivery for uterine contractions that are too weak. [Pg.126]

Adverse reproductive effects have been observed in animals fed PCB in the diet. Fetal resorptions were common, and dose-related incidences of terata were found in pups and piglets when females were fed Arochlor 1254 at Img/kg/day or more. Long-term low-level maternal exposure of rats before breeding and throughout gestation and lactation caused permanent hearing deficits, decreased serum thyroid hormones, and reproductive effects. PCBs have been observed in human cord blood and in tissues of newborn humans and animals. ... [Pg.157]

Maternal PKU occurs when a pregnant woman with uncontrolled PKU has high levels of Phe in her blood, leading to elevated levels of Phe in fetal blood and consequent neurologic damage, including microcephaly and mental retardation. [Pg.131]

In addition to all of the adverse effects and contraindications previously described for morphine, the following contraindications apply specifically to these drugs. They are contraindicated in pregnant women because of their potential teratogenic effects. They also can cause respiratory depression in the mother, which reduces oxygenation of fetal blood, and in the newborn the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in the newborn is also increased. [Pg.323]
