Common sense advises that you should take your behavioural modifications a step at a time. Do not expect to revolutionize your management style overnight. Comprehensive action plans for change wito dates are likely to be unrealistic. One or two small steps may be realizable. More can come later. 

In a general sense, communication will be positive if the mediator enhances growth or leads to favourable modification of the behaviour of the receiving oiganism. Such a supply may lead to commensalism, proto-cooperation and eventually symbiosis. Interaction is said to be negative when the mediator is toxic in itself (antibiotic, antiseptic or toxic) or brings about a lethal metabolic or behavioural modification in the receiver. 

The mediators involved in this type of interaction are the pheromones, which act in various ways they may (1) cause a momentery behavioural modification, immediate but potentially reversible (releaser pheromone) (2) induce a series of modifications at the nervous and endocrinous levels foUowing prolonged stimulation (primer pheromones) or (3) lead to a phenotypic modification of the receiving individual when they act at certain critical periods (imprinting pheromones).

Behavioural modification is a potential non-pharmacological treatment strategy. A psychological approach presumes some psychogenic component to the symptom and most evidence for its efficacy has come from case series reported in the paediatric literature (Gay et al. 1987). 

The possible roles of 5-HT4-RS in emotional and rewarding processes are only suggested by their presence in limbic structures such as septum, nucleus accumbens, ventral pallidum, and frontal cortex in human (Table 4, Figure 5) [55, 56]. Early laboratory and field study work carried out by Adam and Scott (1971), Adam (1975), McCarthy (1978) and Kim and Hammer (1976) had already demonstrated the potential of behaviour modification techniques in a quality improvement process. These studies, however, tended to focus on specific, time-bound experiments within a particular setting or occupation. The model implies that attitude and behaviour are linked such as to influence and reinforce each otiier. Psychologists began to look at behaviour as a subject itself rather titan as merely an indicator of internal states of mind (i.e. attitudes) following early work by Skinner. This approach has led to behavioural analysis and behavioural modification. By focusing on behaviours, accidents can be prevented. In turn this reinforces an attitude toward a safe work environment and a culture of zero tolerance. 

This chapter considers how behaviour modification processes can assist to control risks and reduce injury.
