Fava beans (broad beans, Vida faba) contain a significant amount of L-DOPA. Anecdotal reports have noted improvement of Parkinson s disease after the consumption of fava beans (Spengos and Vassilopoulos 1988). Rabey and colleagues (1992,1993) have demonstrated the efficacy of fava beans in this respect. [Pg.205]

Crystalline alpha-amylases have been prepared from hog pancreas, human pancreas and saliva, " rat pancreas, malted barley, Aspergillus oryzae, - - Pseudomonas saccharophila, Bacillus subtilis, °- Bacillus coagulans, and Bacillus stearothermoph-ilus, whilst extensively purified enzymes have been obtained from malted sorghum, soya beans, broad beans, malted wheat, pigeon pancreas, and shore crab. The preparative procedures usually involve precipitations by ammonium sulfate and acetone. [Pg.305]

Grits, flours, and isolates for food applications are produced also from other legumes, mainly peanuts, beans, broad beans, and peas (Lampart-Szczapa, 2001). [Pg.153]

Amylo-1 —> 6-glucosidase obtained by Cori and Larner218 from rabbit muscles, and R-enzyme isolated by Hobson, Whelan and Peat219 from potatoes and broad beans, are typical debranching enzymes, which will hydrolyze the 6 — 1-a-D-glucosidic linkage rather than the normal 4 —> 1-a-D linkage. These enzymes will therefore be particularly important in determinations of the fine structure of amylopectin, if they can be sufficiently well purified. [Pg.385]

The phenomenon of translocation within the plant has been widely studied and W. A. L. David, using 32P O.M.P.A. on broad beans, cabbage, hops, peas and strawberries has shown that the insecticide passes preferentially into the young parts of the plants, and upwards rather than downwards, although translocation in the downward direction does exist. Thus translocation of systemic insecticides has been attempted for the control of root aphis (e.g. lettuce root aphis). [Pg.190]

The coffee of commerce is from the nutlike seeds called beans, that are borne by a tropical evergreen tree, with glistening and waxy surfaced, broad leaves. The seeds are two to a fruit, in pairs, and are covered with a thin, usually red flesh, that makes a cherrylike fruit. There are said to be 50 to 80 different species of coffee. It is still a profitable field of botanical study. At present three species of the tree produce coffee of commerce. [Pg.44]

Broad bears, corrmonly called fava beans, are common to diets in Mediterranean countries (Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey), in which their ingestion may cause severe hemolysis in G6PDH individuals. Clinically, the condition presents as pallor, hemoglobinuria, jaundice, and severe anemia 24-48 hours after ingestion of the beans. [Pg.202]
