Toyota and Honda have been experimenting with both methanol and metal-hydride storage of hydrogen. Honda has built several test cars, in 1999 a Honda FCX-V1 (metal-hydride hydrogen) and FCX-V2 (methanol) were tested at a track in Japan. The Ballard powered version-1 was ready, but proved to be a little sluggish and noisy. The other car suffered from a noisy fuel cell. Both Honda fuel cell test cars were built on the chassis of the discontinued EV Plus battery electric. Honda used a different and more aerodynamic body. [Pg.173]

Series hybrids are electric cars with support from a small ICE, where only the electric motor propels the vehicle. There is no mechanical link between the combustion engine and the wheels. The ICE drives a generator that produces electricity that either flows to the electric motor that turns the wheels, or to a battery for storage. When the car is running solely on batteries, the engine turns on after the batteries have drained to a certain level and begins to recharge them. [Pg.232]

Electricity can be used as a transportation fuel to power battery electric and fuel cell vehicles. Electric fuel is electricity that is used to directly power the vehicle. In a sustainable energy future, electricity will become the prime energy carrier. We now have to focus our research on electricity storage, electric cars and the modernization of the existing electricity irrfrastractrrre. [Pg.94]

Supercapacitors are electrical storage devices that can deliver a higher amount of energy in a short time. Hybrid electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles need such a surge of energy to start, more than can be provided by regular batteries. Superca-... [Pg.235]

Lithium is used to manufacture electric storage cells (batteries) that have a long shelf hfe for use in heart pacemakers, cameras, and so forth. [Pg.48]

Rubidium hydroxide (RbOH) is very hygj-oscopic (absorbs large amounts of water for its weight). It is also an excellent absorber of carbon dioxide. Rubidium hydroxide can be used to etch glass and as an electrolyte in low-temperature electric storage batteries for use in vehicles in the subarctic. [Pg.59]

Lead is commonly obtained by roasting galena (PbS) with carbon in an oxygen-rich environment to convert sulfide ores to oxides and by then reducing the oxide to metallic lead. Sulfur dioxide gas is produced as a waste product. Large amounts of lead are also recovered by recycling lead products, such as automobile lead-acid electric storage batteries. About one-third of all lead used in the United States has been recycled. [Pg.204]

Lead has many uses and is an important commercial commodity. One of the most common uses is in the acid-lead electrical storage batteries used in automobiles. Much of the lead in these devices can be recycled and used again. [Pg.205]

Today the most common use of antimony is as an alloy metal with lead to make the lead harder. This lead—antimony alloy is used for electrical storage batteries, for sheathing for electrical and TV cables, in the making of wheel bearings, and as solder. [Pg.219]

Zinc oxide occurs in nature as mineral zincite. It is the most important zinc compound and has numerous industrial applications. Zinc oxide is the pigment in white paints. It is used to make enamels, white printing inks, white glue, opaque glasses, rubber products and floor tiles. It is used in cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals, dental cements, storage batteries, electrical equipment, and piezoelectric devices. Other applications are as a flame retardant, as a UV absorber in plastics, and a reagent in analytical chemistry. A major application of zinc oxide is in the preparation of most zinc salts. In medicine, the compound is used as an antiseptic, an astringent and a topical protectant. [Pg.990]

Nakahara et al. (4) prepared an electricity storage device consisting of poly(2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidinoxy methacrylate), (VII), for use as a negative electrode in lithium secondary batteries. [Pg.124]
