Attitude of acceptance

The overview of characteristics of the various propositional attitudes clearly shows that there are important differences between the attitudes. Belief-based attitudes B, K, OU, EU and DB aim at truth, either an absolute truth as in K or a subjective truth as in B, OU, EU or DB, whereas the attitude of acceptance does not involve a reference to any truth per se. Acceptance depends on the context, whereas beliefs and knowledge do not. 

An important distinction exists between belief-based attitudes (B, K, OU, EU, DB) and acceptance-based attitudes (A, AEB). This involves the role of non-epistemic values as justification for the type of attitude taken to a proposition. In the belief-based attitudes, the value judgments of a subject are irrelevant because whether or not one takes something to be true does not depend on whether one sees value in taking it to be true. In contrast, in acceptance-based attitudes, values do play a role as supporting justification. This is related to the attitude of acceptance more being tied to a particular action in a particular context, rather than aiming at the discovery of a true value. 

The attitude of alternative agriculture movements to irrigation ranges from outright refusal not to alter natural conditions , to prohibition of using plastic pipes, maybe in the belief that metal or asbestos-cement pipes are less polluting, to reject of re-using treated domestic wastewaters, to acceptance, in a more realistic mood. 

Benefits are often more important than risks to consumers. Consumers become willing to accept products processed with specific technologies when they become convinced that these products offer significant benefits over other products. These benefits can include decreases in price as well as increases in product quality, such as taste and naturalness purity, such as reduced use of chemicals and wholesomeness, such as better nutrition (Kuznesof and Ritson, 1996). Hamstra (1995) reported that perceived benefits of biotechnology products had greater statistical influences on Dutch consumer attitudes and acceptance than perceived risks. 

What we have been saying should not suggest to the reader the desirability of accepting uncritically evidence for the importance of genetics. We advocate instead that all phases of the subject be looked at with the same critical attitude, and that the evidence to be found in the field of genetics be given fair consideration and not be rejected a priori on the basis of false philosophical implications. 

Whatever the true merits of the reasons and the justifications for the conservative attitudes of most scientists, it is true that one seldom hears arguments for avoiding errors of the second kind, especially for small differences between means(d). It appears instead that there is a convention in the life science-related disciplines which automatically sets at 0.05 the maximum acceptable value for errors of the first kind without critical consideration of all that that might entail. 

In their homes and their education, the French are conditioned to think, and individualism becomes a Cartesian attitude of systematic doubt, intellectual curiosity, and not accepting as correct what is evidently wrong. Joseph Prudhomme s statement, That is my opinion, and what is more, I share it, is still a valid stereotype. 

Thrusters are rockets for maneuvering and controlling the attitude of space vehicles. The usual monopropellant for thrusters is catalytically decomposed Hydrazine. In such a way therapists often are seduced into letting the client know their disapproval of her prostitution or of his driving while intoxicated. In our opinion it is not the task of the therapist to make moral judgements about the client.
