Criticality considerations

Older rerefining units used 2-5 kg/L of activated clay at 40—70°C and higher temperatures in place of TEE to clean the oil (80). More elaborate chemical and hydrotreating of used engine oils without a distillation step has been developed by Phillips Petroleum for processing 40,000 /yr (10 X 10 gal/yr). Establishment of a reflable feedstock supply is a critical consideration for larger rerefining plants. [Pg.256]

The military has historically led the way in the development and application of adhesive bonding on aircraft. This practice continues today, primarily with bombers, fighter and attack aircraft where weight is a critical consideration, but also with support craft such as reconnaissance aircraft and freighters. [Pg.1189]

A critical consideration with UF technology is the problem of fouling. Foulants interfere with UF by reducing product rates- sometimes drastically-and altering membrane selectivity. The story of a successful UF application is in many respects the story of how fouling was successfully controlled. Fouling must be considered at every step of UF process development in order to achieve success. [Pg.351]

Computers, like plant equipment, fail. Therefore, the use of a commercially available computer is recommended. The critical considerations include availability of repair parts and local vendor support. [Pg.807]

Figure 10.4 shows some typical automotive converters. A critical consideration in their design is that they must not obstruct the flow of the exhaust, otherwise the engine would stall. Hence the reactor must have a rather open structure. This is achieved by applying the catalytically active particles on a multichannel array, called... [Pg.381]

Economical factors, such as disposal costs, the availability of conventional materials, and transportation costs, are critical considerations. As with any material, transportation costs are generally the highest cost factor in recycling solid waste. The most economically sustainable options for recycling foundry solid waste will generally match the volume and characteristics of the materials with nearby businesses and construction projects. Small foundries may not generate enough material on a weekly or monthly basis to satisfy the need for construction sands. In this case, it may be necessary to collect similar wastestreams from multiple sources or to partially substitute for conventional materials in order to meet volume requirements. [Pg.193]

Safety considerations are paramount in any boron hydride synthesis. The energy yield from the oxidations of boron hydrides is too high for any cavalier treatment of boron hydrides. Exclusion of air is the critical consideration in diborane reactions. Decaborane(14) is less reactive, generally, in a kinetic sense, but the thermodynamic potential is comparable. In addition, all volatile boron hydrides are toxic. The procedures described in the latter two preparations are within our experience non-hazardous. These procedures should be followed in every detail improvisation is not recommended. [Pg.82]

Since immunotoxin conjugates are destined to be used in vivo, their preparation involves more critical consideration of crosslinking methods than most of the other conjugation protocols described in this book. The following sections discuss the problems associated with toxin conjugates and the main crosslinking methods for preparing them. [Pg.829]

All should be used with caution, however. It is the individual z-scores that are the critical consideration when considering the proficiency of a laboratory. [Pg.94]

A critical consideration in the development of biocatalytic systems is the form in which the enzyme or enzyme system is going to be used. There are two general approaches. One is to use isolated enzymes. If these are inexpensive, they can be used as disposable biocatalysts, as is the case for glucose isomerase, ° which is the key biocatalyst in the production of high-fructose corn syrups from starch, or the lipases and proteases that are present in detergents. Alternatively, if enzymes are expensive to produce, they can be immobilized and used repeatedly by recovering the enzyme particles after each use. [Pg.282]

Whatever the true merits of the reasons and the justifications for the conservative attitudes of most scientists, it is true that one seldom hears arguments for avoiding errors of the second kind, especially for small differences between means(d). It appears instead that there is a convention in the life science-related disciplines which automatically sets at 0.05 the maximum acceptable value for errors of the first kind without critical consideration of all that that might entail. [Pg.246]

Cellular uptake of AS-ODNs is restricted because of their large molecular mass as well as their polyanionic character. When added directly to cells in culture, only 1-2% of the AS-ODNs will be cell-associated. Therefore, enhanced AS-ODN uptake is a critical consideration in developing these agents for therapeutic applications. [Pg.147]

Nevertheless, in many electronic tongue studies, such constraints are ignored and ANNs are used as the default choice. This choice is also made in cases with very poor data sets and without performing a proper validation. This may be due to the fact that the related computational software is easily available and that many people have a propensity to follow the predominant trends and to use the most potent instruments available, without critical considerations. Furthermore, perhaps, there is a fashionable association of ideas coimecting the concepts of artificial tongue and artificial intelligence. [Pg.92]

It does not block BZD withdrawal symptoms. This is often a critical consideration because many patients have previously been on or are presently taking a BZD. [Pg.233]

Experimental studies of the temperature changes and heat effects resulting from reversible deformations of glassy and semicrystalline polymers have been carried out since the 1950s. The early results were summarized and analysed by Muller 1). Since that time, a number of experimental results on thermomechanical behaviour of glassy and semicrystalline polymers have been obtained. This part of our review is dealing with critical consideration of these results. [Pg.76]
