Atom chemistry

In spite of the insecure basis which the orbital model possesses, it has proved fruitful in the field of atomic chemistry and physics. Firstly the use of electronic configurations serve as a basis for the classification of the lines shown by atomic spectra (Condon and Shortley [1935], Slater [1949]). [Pg.27]

However, the taxonomic effectiveness of electronic configurations is not a basis for thinking that quantum mechanics can successfully account even for the restricted field of atomic chemistry. Clearly, molecular quantum chemistry is even less secure due to the additional assumptions which must be made apart from the validity of atomic orbitals. [Pg.28]

Lagowski et al. (79) synthesized a very large series of bis(arene) Cr(0) compounds, thereby providing a good example of the use of metal-atom chemistry in synthesizing homologous series of compounds... [Pg.147]

The next stage, which we ought to try to reach as soon as possible, is that of measurement of physical parameters of the systems so as to relate hot atom chemistry to other areas of physical chemistry. Here one would think immediately of the possible use of electron spin resonance to observe the existence and stability of the various radical species which have been postulated or inferred to occur in several systems -Cr(CO)j., Mn(CO)5, -FeCp, As 2> others. One might... [Pg.103]

The only respect in which the hot atom chemistry of organometallic compounds has so far been applied to other fields of study is in the area of isotope enrichment. Much of this has been done for isolation of radioactive nuclides from other radioactive species for the purpose of nuclear chemical study, or for the preparation of high specific activity radioactive tracers. Some examples of these applications have been given in Table II. The most serious difficulty with preparation of carrier-free tracers by this method is that of radiolysis of the target compound, which can be severe under conditions suited to commercial isotope production, so that the radiolysis products dilute the enriched isotopes. A balance can be struck in some cases, however, between high yield and high specific activity (19, 7J),... [Pg.247]

Then he swiftly produced as many different varieties of the compounds as possible, including dimethylzinc, which convinced other scientists to accept Avogadro s theory, a foundation of atomic chemistry and methyl-mercury iodide, the first of many organomercury compounds known to poison people who eat mercury-contaminated fish. Despite his skill at synthesis, Frankland did not discover tetraethyl lead, the gasoline additive that became one of the most important industrial compounds of the mid-twentieth century (Chapter 6). [Pg.47]

The relationship between "conventional" and "high energy" processes in organometallic chemistry is defined. The growth of metal atom chemistry is surveyed as a model for the impact of a "high energy process" on the field of organometallic chemistry. [Pg.6]

Spectroscopists also saw the potential of reacting ligands with transition metal under matrix isolation conditions. Photolysis of metal carbonyls in organic (383 or inert gas matrices (39) had already been done, but atoms offered the possibility of step-wise addition of ligands. DeKock (40), Turner (41 ), and Moskovits and Ozin (42) made early contributions, but the work of the last two became dominant (32). By 1972, there were the two distinct branches in transition metal atom chemistry, the preparative and matrix spectroscopic studies. [Pg.10]

However, the cost of setting up for metal atom chemistry like the Oxford group has become quite high—at least 40,000 for a do-it-yourself apparatus and at least 100,000 for a commercial apparatus. This cost factor is quite inhibiting and there are few chemists who can afford to "have a go" at that price without a very clear idea of the value of what they can achieve. [Pg.11]

We have said that photochemistry and now atom chemistry have... [Pg.12]

Let us now turn our attention to the newly emerging field of excited state metal atom chemistry. The discovery of the excited state dimerization reaction (34) ... [Pg.308]

On the other hand to perform excited state metal atom chemistry in the M/CH3Br system is not quite so straightforward (58) ... [Pg.308]

Occultists, then, increasingly focused on alchemy as a material science validated by the new atomic chemistry and physics, even if it was a science with spiritual implications. Many occult phenomena now began to be explained in terms of radiation and material particles as occultists turned to scientists to validate their belief.6 Never had modem occultism been so much concerned with the nature of matter—that is, the nature of material change. To understand this development in the relationship between occultism and material science, we must first briefly rehearse the history of the broad occult movement beginning half a century earlier. [Pg.12]

From the first meeting of the Alchemical Society, recent theories in atomic chemistry and physics immediately entered the discussions. Redgrove s paper, mentioned above, brought up the subject. Walter Gorn Old raised Crookes s theory of the protyle as an essentially alchemical notion. Sijil Abdul -Ali discussed the resemblance of properties of the Philosopher s Stone to those of the ether (Journal of the Alchemical Society. 1913a, 15-16). The early... [Pg.59]

Soddy does little more here than restate his early contention that the new atomic chemistry is fundamentally a kind of modern alchemy. [Pg.163]

Up to this point, we have been describing single atoms and their electrons. Chemical reactions occur when electrons from the outer shells of atoms of two or more different elements interact. Nuclear reactions involve interactions of particles in the nucleus (mainly protons and neutrons) of atoms, not the atoms electrons. This distinction is fundamental. The former is atomic chemistry (or electron chemistry), and the latter is nuclear chemistry (or nuclear physics). [Pg.15]

Chemistry is a physical science that studies the structure and properties of elementary matter. Matter interacts with other substances. Matter can be defined as something that occupies space, has mass, and cannot be created or destroyed, but can be changed from one form to another. Matter is stuff that can be perceived by one or more of our senses, as opposed to something intangible such as an idea, the mind, or spirits (ghosts and angels). We usually think of matter as the chemical elements composed of atoms and the compounds composed of molecules, which are combinations of atoms. Chemistry is the science of how and what... [Pg.446]
