Assets productivity

In the past two decades, chemical companies in all segments of the industry have launched significant efforts to improve their production functions. The main target areas have been labor and asset productivity, and improvements here have been achieved by removing bottlenecks, expanding capacity, and building up process and product quality. [Pg.152]

Solvay Advanced Polymers entered the LCP market in 2001 when it acquired BP Amoco s advanced polymers business in exchange for Solvay s pol q)ropylene assets. Production capacity stands at around 2,000 tpa in 2002. [Pg.177]

Supply chain managers do more than coordinate flows efficiently and effectively, but must also simultaneously protect the supply chain and its stakeholders from harm. The study of supply chain security management emerged from this dilemma. Supply chain security management is defined as, the application of policies, procedures, and technology to protect supply chain assets (product, fecilities, equipment, information, and personnel) from theft, damage, or terrorism, and to prevent the introduction of unauthorized contraband, people, or weapons of mass destruction into the supply chain (Closs and McGarrell 2004 p. 8). [Pg.294]

This method attempts to relate the capital allowance to the total life of the assets (i.e. the field s economic lifetime) by linking the annual capital allowance to the fraction of the remaining reserves produced during the year. The capital allowance is calculated from the unrecovered assets at the end of the previous year times the ratio of the current year s production to the reserves at the beginning of the year. As long as the ultimate recovery of the field remains the same, the capital allowance per barrel of production is constant. However, this is rarely the case, making this method more complex in practice. [Pg.311]

In the United States, more than 16.3 x 10 kg of human-inedible raw materials are available each year, and the rendering industry is a valuable asset in diverting these into valuable ingredients for use primarily in animal foods (4). The three largest meat packers are responsible for nearly four-fifths of aU red meat production (5) and enormous amounts of rendered meat meal and animal fat. Three broiler producers account for about 40% of the total broiler production. American Proteins, Inc. (RosweU, Georgia), the world s largest processor of poultry by-products, produces more than 450,000 t of poultry meal, feather meal, and poultry fat each year. It also produces more than 100,000 t of fish meal, fish oil, and fish products each year. Pish meal production worldwide in 1986 was estimated at 6.23 x 10 t, which with the 125 x 10 t of meat and bone meal plus 6.67 x 10 t of feather meal and poultry by-product meal (6) is the primary source of animal proteins used by the pet food industry. [Pg.150]

Disodium Oetaborate Tetrahydrate, Commercially available products, having the approximate composition of a hypothetical disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, have found apphcation in wood (qv) preservatives, fertilizer sprays, insecticides, herbicides, and fire retardants. In many apphcations the large water solubihty of these products is an asset. [Pg.205]

Because calcium sulfide contained in the black ash had a highly unpleasant odor, methods were developed to remove the odor by recovering the sulfur, therein providing at least part of the raw-material for the sulfuric acid required in the first part of the process. Thus, the Leblanc prtKcss demonstrated, at the very beginning, the typical ability of the chemical industry to develop new processes and new products, and often in so doing to turn a liability into an asset. [Pg.263]

Hirsutene (1) and A9(,2,-capnellcnc (2), the parent members of the hirsutane and capnellane families of triquinane natural products, respectively, are isomeric molecules that possess four contiguous stereogenic centers, one of which is quaternary. The linearly fused tricyclopentanoid frameworks of compounds 1 and 2 are obviously very similar, differing only with respect to the positions of the three methyl groups. An asset of Curran s tandem radical cyclization strategy is that it provides a unified entry into a wide variety of linear condensed cyclopentanoid natural products. As a result, it is possible to devise nearly identical retrosynthetic pathways for these structurally related molecules. [Pg.409]

There is a formula for business failures based on Dun Bradstreet, Inc. annually published data. The vast majority of the firms involved are small. Why do failures occur D B has offered the following tabular explanation (apparent cause/percent) inadequate sales/49.9, competitive weakness/25.3, heavy operating expenses/13.0, receivables difficul-ties/8.3, inventory difficulties/7.7, excessive fixed assets/3.2, poor location/2.7, neglect/0.8, disaster/0.8, fraud/0.5, and others/1.1. Numbers do not add up to 100% because some failures are attributed to a combination of apparent causes. One can include that product design directly influences competitive weakness and heavy operating expenses. [Pg.295]

Here, marginal costs are lower than marginal revenues, so a profit is being made, but the level of contribution is not enough to maintain fixed assets and to leave sufficient profit to make the business worthwhile. This can be sustained for the short-term only, unless the enterprise is in some way contributing to the success of a more profitable product. [Pg.117]

For corporations the same reasoning applies. To offer the prime interest rate the lender must be sure he can get his capital back plus interest. This means that the borrower s total assets must be considerably greater than the current liabilities and debts. Consider the simplified balance sheet given in Table 10-13. By current assets is meant cash and everything involved in working capital-feedstocks, unsold product, plus all the product that has been shipped but for which no payment has... [Pg.321]
