Fiber crops

J. M. Dempsey, Fiber Crops, University Presses of Florida, Gainesville, 1975. [Pg.365]

Kenaf is a grass fiber crop that has been proposed as a papermaking source. It is an aimual crop and can be grown in many parts of the country. There have been agronomic problems with kenaf, primarily its vulnerabiUty to nematode pests. Another problem is that kenaf is harvested once a year and must then be stored, usually as silage. There is some loss of the fiber in storage. [Pg.449]

Having pesticides as a powerful weapon against a wide array of pests that diminish the yields of food and fiber crops is and will continue to be a valuable asset to agricultural production. Yet... [Pg.318]

Because of the requirements of circumstances, it is impossible to wait until the ideal combination which should be met in the development of a new insecticide is attained. We are faced today even more than in the immediate past with the necessity of protecting our food and fiber crops from depredations. Our third responsibility is to make available the best material we have today, which will aid in the production of our most critically needed food and fiber crops. [Pg.208]

The levels of antifeedants can be raised safely only in plants such as forest trees or fiber crops, not in food plants for humans or livestock. Such problems have arisen inadvertently. For instance, a new insect-resistant potato cultivarhad to be withdrawn from the market because it contained high levels of the carcinogens solanine and chaconine (Renwick etal, 1984). In another example, an insect-resistant celery had 10 times the usual concentration of the carcinogen 8-methoxypsoralen (and related psoralens), which caused dermatitis in produce handlers (Seligman etal, 1987). [Pg.406]

Because of the intensity of cultivation in many regions of the world, notably among the larger producers of food and fiber crops (where there is repetitive use of the same tracts of land year after year), the uniformity of nutrient content, as may have been present in the virgin soil, cannot be assumed In fact, experience has shown that Ihe same soil class may vary widely in nutrient content from one field to the next. The ability of soils to provide plant nutrition is a reflection of how the soils have been artificially treated (fertilized and conditioned) over the remote and recent past and... [Pg.612]

Because of recent adverse publicity and criticism, the public has the misconception that pesticides have been spread with reckless abandon all over the landscape, contaminating all food and fiber crops, decimating the fish and wildlife, exterminating the songbirds, and polluting the entire... [Pg.10]

Insects were the first major focus of pest control, whether to prevent the destruction of food or fiber crops or to limit the spread of insect vectors of disease. There is little doubt that the use of insecticides had a profound impact on the further development of civilization. The control of anopheline mosquitoes and malarial infection, as well as vectors for typhus. [Pg.1955]

The control of pests of food and fiber crops is essential to attaining acceptable yields and quality. In 1987, nearly 20 billion was spent worldwide on products for combatting plant diseases, weeds, and insects. Despite this enormous input, nearly 40% of the world s food and fiber was lost to these pests. [Pg.255]

Specific gravity of dry CNP is about 1.57—1.59 g/cm tapped density can be 0.25—0.30 g/cm and bulk density 0.1—0.2 g/cm. The nanoparticles isolated from cotton cellulose, bacterial cellulose, and tunicate are usually chemically pure, while CNP from herbs, shmbs, bast fibers, crops, wood pulps, and some other sources may contain residual xylan and lignin. [Pg.255]

As long as mankind continues to cultivate and grow plants for food, feed, and fiber, crops will be threatened by various enemies and agents such as insects, fungi, and bacteria. Prevention and control of insect pests and plant diseases will remain an important objective of agrochemical research. In this study, the isolation and structure determination of several compounds showing insect antifeedant activity and antifungal activity from Peru plants are presented. [Pg.399]

Although ammonium chloride is best known as a rice fertilizer, it has been successfully tested and used on other crops such as wheat, barley, sugarcane, maize, fiber crops, and sorghum in a variety of climatic conditions. Of particular note, however, is the use of ammonium chloride on palms a linear response of coconut to chlorine in terms of copra yield per tree was shown 164]. [Pg.250]

The top three growers of fiber crops in the world are China, India, and the United States. Cotton makes up the largest share in aU three countries. In the United States, more than half of all cotton goes into clothing production, which is led by jeans. [Pg.33]

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a plant in the Malvaceae family. It is a wrarm-season annual fiber crop grown in temperate and tropical areas. Kenaf s significant contribution to the supply of raw material for cellulose pulp and other products makes it a potential substitute for wood resomces [1]. Due to its rapid growth, ecological adaptability and production yield, kenaf is considered as the fiber sotnce of the futiu-e [1],... [Pg.341]
