Assessment of Technology

One of the large shibboleths in expanded use of mobility methods was the ever-present radioactive ion source, and this pattern of design and nse of IMS is changed. The [Pg.394]

At the release of the first edition of this book in 1994, there was no comprehensive scientific model for ion chemistry or ion behavior in drift tubes. These effects of kinetics and ion behavior on the appearance of mobility spectra are now well described and accepted. Still, new challenges are now apparent in refined understandings for the meaning of K (which reflects the averaged size of the collision cross section) and detail of ion structure or shape. This is not fully developed and is d ndent on computational modeling. Spectral libraries are now available, although perhaps not well publicized or obtainable in searchable and user-friendly software packages. [Pg.395]

Finally, the combination of mobility and MS is seen as a highly visible trend in this edition and was only barely discernible in the prior edition. This is surely one of the transformative influences today in IMS, making the combination of the two methods for ion measurement very much more than the sum of parts. We believe that advances in mass spectrometry will occur largely outside the vacuum chamber and with ion preparation and handling. Mobility spectrometers are ideally suited as an interface between ambient pressure ion sources, which can sometimes produce a complex mixture of ions from a sample, and the MS. [Pg.395]

Cost assessments of technologies and, even more, projections into the future inherently bear high uncertainties, with assumptions on feedstock prices having a major impact on economics (also closely related to efficiencies via the feedstock volumes). The economics presented here should, therefore, not be interpreted as... [Pg.279]

There are some differences between a narrow subject matter approach, which will be the subject of discussion during our Workshop, and approaches to safety analysis developed in Russia. We do not separate nuclear material management from technologies and facilities. Therefore, we develop safety analyses based on the assessment of technological safety, and nuclear materials are a component of this assessment. To go ahead, we should always analyze the statistics of equipment failures, the causes of troubles or accidents, including those with spontaneous chain reactions in the work with nuclear materials, and storage of nuclear materials. [Pg.5]

In practice, in the course of production of fissile materials, permanent sanitary assessments of technological safety, identification of operations to be carried out in working areas according to the degree of hazard as well as sanitary supervision of the working areas and the production environment, ventilation and gas purification systems, working places of the personnel, etc., are obligatory. [Pg.24]
