Aspiration effect

When using PFT with a neutral selector, it is quite difficult to avoid any entrance of the chiral selector into the ionization source, particularly at a high pH, where EOF is important. The use of BGE at low pH and/or coated capillary to minimize EOF is therefore mandatory. However, the coaxial sheath gas, which generally assists the ionization process, leads to an aspirating phenomenon of the chiral selector in the MS direction. Javerfalk et al. were the first to apply PFT with a neutral methyl-/i-CD for the separation of racemic bupivacaine and ropivacaine with a polyacrylamide-coated capillary and an acidic pH buffer (pH 3). Cherkaoui et al. employed another neutral CD (HP-/1-CD) with a PVA-coated capillary for the analysis of amphetamines and their derivatives. To prevent a detrimental aspiration effect, analyses were carried out without nebulization pressure. Numerous other studies presented excellent results such as the enantioselective separation of adrenoreceptor antagonist drugs using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) the separation of clenbuterol enantiomers after solid-phase extraction (SPE) of plasma samples or the use of CD dual system for the simultaneous chiral determination of amphetamine, methamphetamine, dimethamphetamine, and p-hydroxymethamphetamine in urine. [Pg.487]

In an atmospheric spray tower the air movement - is dependent on atmospheric conditions and the aspirating effect of the spray nozzles. Natural-draft cooling tower operation depends on a chimney or stack to induce air movement. Mechanical-draft cboling towers utilize fans to move ambient air through the tower. Deck-filled towers contain tiers of splash bars or decks to assist in the breakup of water drops to increase the total water surface and subsequently the evaporation rate. Spray-filled towers depend only on spray nozzles for water breakup. Coil shed towers are comprised of a combination structure of a cooling tower installed on top of a substructure that contains atmospheric section coils. Beckman Elutriation Method. The Beckman elutriation method uses a chamber designed so that the centrifugal effect of the radial inward fluid flow is constant (Fig. 3). The separation chambers are made of transparent epoxy resin which faciUtates observation of the movements of the cell boundary in strobe light illumination. This enables detection of the radius at which the cells are separating. When a mixture of cells, eg, mononuclear white cells, enters the chamber, separation can be achieved by fine tuning centrifuge speed and inward fluid flow to the specific cell group. This is a laboratory method suitable for relatively small numbers of cells. Chambers are available in sizes to handle 2-3 x 10 , 1 2 x 10 , and 1 x 10 ° cells. Highly sensitive iastmmental techniques, such as x-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption spectrometry, and iaductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, have wide appHcation for the analysis of silver ia a multitude of materials. In order to minimize the effects of various matrices ia which silver may exist, samples are treated with perchloric or nitric acid. Direct-aspiration atomic absorption (25) and iaductively coupled plasma (26) have silver detection limits of 10 and 7 l-lg/L, respectively. Cefuroxime (35) is effective against community-acquired pneumonia in which ampicillin-resistant Haemophilus influence is the probable etiologic agent. Cefoxitin (23) is used to treat mixed aerobic—anaerobic infections including pelvic infections, intra-abdorninal infections, and nosocomial aspiration pneumonia.
