Positive Pumps. Positive pumps employed by the food industry have a rotating cavity between two lobes, two gears that rotate in opposite directions, or a crescent or stationary cavity and a rotor. Rotary positive pumps operate at relatively low speed. Fluid enters the cavity by gravity flow or from a centrifugal pump. The positive pump also may use a reciprocating cavity, and may be a plunger or piston pump. These pumps are not truly positive with respect to displacement, but are used for metering product flow. [Pg.361]

Variable-speed basket centrifuges rotate on a vertical axis. The cyhndrical perforated basket, connected at one end to a bowl head or hub, is driven from below or suspended from above by a driveshaft. It is capped at the other end with a weir ring. The hub may be a solid piece or with an annular opening. If the hub is a sohd piece, the shiny is introduced into the basket at low speed despite the fact that the earths gravity may influence the annular pool. The settled sohds can be removed from the top only when the machine is at rest. Otherwise,... [Pg.1735]

Medium range compressor efficiency (higher than centrifugal lower than low-speed). [Pg.259]

Higher maintenance cost than low-speed or centrifugal. [Pg.259]

Figure 7.1. Effect of GM-CSF on neutrophil protein biosynthesis. Human neutrophils were incubated in RPMI1640 medium supplemented with 2.5% foetal calf serum and 60 jtCi/ml [35S]-methionine, in the presence and absence of 50 U/ml GM-CSF. After 4 h incubation at 37 °C, the cells were pelleted by low-speed centrifugation. The proteins in the cell pellets were precipitated by 10% trichloracetic acid and then analysed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, using iso-electrofocussing in the first dimension. Electrophoresis in the second dimension was performed in the presence of SDS and used a 12% acrylamide gel. Source Experiment of Becky Stringer. Figure 7.1. If the concentration profile can be determined the moduli can be evaluated. In principle there is no reason why this should be a non-linear measurement, it depends upon the magnitude of the gravitational Peclet number. Buscall35 suggested that a low speed centrifuge could be used to apply different acceleration gradients to the dispersion. If the angular velocity of the rotor is cor and if X is the distance from the centre of the rotor to the top of the sediment then the pressure balance equation becomes... [Pg.277]
