Beckman Elutriation Method. The Beckman elutriation method uses a chamber designed so that the centrifugal effect of the radial inward fluid flow is constant (Fig. 3). The separation chambers are made of transparent epoxy resin which faciUtates observation of the movements of the cell boundary in strobe light illumination. This enables detection of the radius at which the cells are separating. When a mixture of cells, eg, mononuclear white cells, enters the chamber, separation can be achieved by fine tuning centrifuge speed and inward fluid flow to the specific cell group. This is a laboratory method suitable for relatively small numbers of cells. Chambers are available in sizes to handle 2-3 x 10 , 1 2 x 10 , and 1 x 10 ° cells. The Beckman chambers can be appHed to collect mononuclear cells from bone marrow aspirates. [Pg.522]

In order to overcome apprehension regarding erosion of turbine blades during service and the hazards attending such failure, provision is made for visual inspection by a strobe light and camera while in operation. Scheduled inspection by a camera (borescope) permits... [Pg.156]

Use a strobe light to inspect belts in operation by timing the strobe to appear to slow-roll the drive. The belts that are slipping will appear to be running at a slower speed than the ones that are correctly set. [Pg.976]

Ensure independent measurement devices for verification of the driver (i.e. engine) and pump rpm are available and accurate, i.e. strobe light hand held tachometer. [Pg.250]

When excited electrically, xenon (sometimes mixed with krypton) produces a brilliant white flash of light that makes it useful as the gas in strobe lights. The flash used in photog-... [Pg.271]

Fire alarm bells or horns should be located in all buildings and on all levels of process structures and other open areas in sufficient number to ensure that all parts of the facility are alerted. Areas with high noise levels should have alarms with a sufficient sound level to overcome ambient noise otherwise, revolving beacons or strobe lights should be used in high noise areas. [Pg.184]

Fligh-speed photography and strobe lighting were used to monitor the motion of bubbles (Liger-Belair, 2002). It was foimd that the bubble radius R of bubbles increases at a constant rate k = d R /d t, as they rise toward the liquid surface. Thus,... [Pg.28]

Under regular light, it is difficult to see the waves traveling back and forth. For a better view, pluck the rubber band in front of a computer monitor or a television screen that uses a cathode ray tube. The light from these devices, which acts like a strobe light, makes the waves appear to slow down Vary the tension in the rubber band to see different effects. [Pg.157]

In the discussion of crystallography, translational symmetry was likened to moving ducks and blinking eyes. Extend this discussion to the action of a strobe light blinking I times per second relative to the following. [Pg.55]

And then came the time to "drive my brainwaves. And so she brought the strobe light which we were using, asked me to close my eyes, put the thing above my head—and turned it on. [Pg.135]

A 10- to 20-Hz Nd YAG laser is very convenient as an excitation source for this experiment, since the doubled output at 532 nm is near the broad 550-nm ruby absorption and the laser pulse is short (5 to 10 ns) compared to the excited Cr radiative lifetime. The student should note the cavity construction of such a laser and, following the directions of the laboratory instructor, adjust the doubling crystal for optimum green output. A 532-nm output of 0.1 to 1 mJ is adequate for the experimeut, so a small and relatively inexpensive flashlamp- or diode-pumped pulsed laser is sufficient. Also suitable as an excitation source would be a dye laser operated near 550 nm and pumped by a nitrogeu or excimer laser. (An incoherent pulsed source such as a strobe light can also be used if the pulse is about 10 /ts or less and if appropriate band-pass filters are used.) For all laser experiments, safety goggles must be worn to minimize hazard due to the high intensity of these sources. The instructor will provide instructions about any special features of the lasers and their safe operation. [Pg.489]

Galai Dynamic Shape Analyzer DSA-10 is a complete shape characterization system for particles in motion. All particles are classified by maximum and minimum diameters, area and perimeter, aspect ratio, shape factor and more. A video microscope camera synchronized with a strobe light takes still pictures continuously of particles in dynamic flow, generating shape information on tens of thousands of particles, in the 1 to 6,000 pm range in minutes. [Pg.477]

To resolve the problem an in-line camera, capable of imaging crystals produced in a commercial crystallizer, was developed [331]. The instrument is based on a borescope and video camera that fits inside the housing of a laser backscatter probe, which installs in a standard ball valve. A strobe light is used to "freeze" crystal motion. Crystal features seen directly include shape, surface roughness, inclusions and transparency. [Pg.604]

The rates measured reflect directly the physical-chemical properties of the water molecule in the nearby hydration shell. These measurements can gauge the properties of the water in an active site where biochemical catalysis takes place. Insertion of proton emitter in a specific site can be useful to determine the internal geometry of a site in a soluble, functioning protein. The subnanosecond measurement is equivalent to a strobe light that freezes in time a transient conformation of a protein. [Pg.99]

A local fire alarm system is installed within the building it protects. The alarm signals are not transmitted to a remote location. These systems usually have bells, horns and strobe lights to notify the occupants. The fire department is dependent upon the occupants for notification of a fire. [Pg.125]

Batch separation experiments were carried out in a baffled glass 2 liter vessel at 25°C. A measured amount of emulsion was poured into the reaction vessel, a measured quantity of exterior phase was added to the vessel and the agitation and timer were turned on. Vessel contents were agitated using six marine-type impellers. Impeller RPM was monitored by strobe light. Samples were taken throughout the experiment via a sampling port at the bottom of the vessel. Emulsion was quickly separated from the exterior phase of samples and discarded. [Pg.72]

The two-phase system undergoes some interesting dynamics during operation as explained theoretically by Ito (2) and demonstrated by strobe light photography by Conway and Ito (3). Within each orbital rotation the two phases undergo a mixing and a separation step and this is reasonably postulated to... [Pg.249]
