Brombenzyl cyanide (CA)—also called a-bromobenzyl cyanide, o-bromotolunltrlle, bromobenzylnitrlle, and a-bromophenylaceto-nitrile--was the most powerful lacrlmator used In World War I (see Table 4-1). It was Introduced by the French army and adopted as the standard U.S. lacrlmator In 1918. It was temporarily abandoned because of its reactions with metal and instability in storage.3 10 Interest in it revived when a need arose for a chemical that was more persistent than CS and CN in enclosed areas, such as rooms and earthen tunnels. In this connection, vapors of CA from ground contamination are lacrlmatory for 15-30 d.6... [Pg.213]

I am commissioned by the Army Coimcil to request that you will institute inquiries to ascertain the locality of any caves, unused tunnels and mines within your Command, which could be utilised for the underground storage of ammunition and explosives, and furnish a repon giving information regarding present use, area, depth, approach by road or rail, atmospheric conditions and such other points as you may wish to emphasise. ... [Pg.169]

Truck transport is likely to be used for transporting the system to and from air, rail, and water terminals, as needed. System components will be enclosed in trailers and placed in standard truck trailers. Special permits may be required for some components that result in overlength or overweight trucks. The Army will conduct route-specific analyses to ensure that roadbeds, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure are suitable for the truck configurations to be used. [Pg.122]

While the overall logistics of these systems is certainly not unusual, the Army will probably have to conduct careful scheduling to ensure that the movement of these systems does not result in disruption to the traveling public. This is especially true of the RRS, where a six-tractor-trailer convoy effect could create traffic problems in certain geographic locations (mountain passes, tunnels, winding roads, etc.) and during peak travel times (rush hour in urban/subur-ban areas). [Pg.122]

In 1966, a retired U.S. Army general suggested that mustard gas be used as an invaluable weapon for clearing Vietnamese tunnels. He thought the use of low-lethality chemicals would save both American and Vietnamese lives by rendering the tunnels useless.145... [Pg.56]

Larkin had a two-fold career, as member of the US Army, and also as successful civil engineer. In the latter field he was intimately connected with the Fort Peck Project. It was in the mid-1930s record-breaking in its proportions, namely a dam with 7x10 m hydraulieally plaeed earthfill, and the peeuliar structure of the basic shale formation through which the diversion tunnels and the spillway were built, as described in the 1935 paper. The main purpose of this projeet was to improve the Missouri River for navigation from Sioux City lA to St. Louis MO, but it had and still has also functions in flood control, and was extensively used for irrigation purposes. [Pg.536]

The Therapeutic Recreation Systems (TRS, Boulder, Colo.) range of terminal devices and the Army Prosthetic Research Laboratory (APRL) hook, which was used predominantly by muscle tunnel cineplasty amputees, are examples of successful voluntary closing devices that are available. The APRL hook has automatic locking, whereas the TRS devices do not. [Pg.831]

Hill 89, the last major strongpoint of southern Okinawa and headquarters of the Japanese 3 2d Army, was attacked by the 7th Division on 20 June 1945. Here again was almost unbelievably difficult terrain cut up by natural caves, tunnels, and crevices. For weeks the area had. been systematically pounded by naval gunfire, long-range artillery, rockets, and aerial bombing. A number of Japanese surrendered but many others fought to the bitter end. [Pg.587]
