Users sometimes fail to recognize the important distinction between classification and identification (Mayr, 1969) both are necessary but the latter is possible only to the extent that the former has been completed. Applied taxonomy can only exist in the presence of an accumulated body of fundamental taxonomic research (Figure 2.1). Current efforts to avoid the serious work of taxonomy can only succeed by lowering the quality of taxonomy itself (Will et al., 2005). Meanwhile, the information revolution is speeding virtually every step of taxonomic work, making such compromise of quality unnecessary. [Pg.13]

As shown in this figure, the format is divided into three main columns labeled Equipment Description, Service Description, and Failure Description. The Equipment Description column may be further divided to show the necessary equipment description levels that make up the taxonomy number. Each column represents one additional hierarchical level and number in the CCPS Taxonomy. Similarly, the Service and Failure Descriptions are divided as needed to fully establish the data cells. If the data quality was acceptable, they were then evaluated for their relevance and fit to the CCPS Taxonomy. The data in the SAIC data base were fitted to taxonomy levels that best correlated with nuclear plant equipment and operational environments. CPI resources were reread thoroughly to understand the equipment subtypes, operating modes, and process severities represented by the data points and to identify as many relevant taxonomy levels as possible. SAIC data analysts made preliminary judgments on the applicability of data points to taxonomy levels and on the quality of the data. This illustrates the general philosophy of taxometrics. For something to be deemed a taxon, it needs to clear several hurdles, which arguably makes taxometrics the most rigorous analytic approach to the study of taxonomy. The last two conditions (e and f) are external consistency tests and apply to all taxometric studies. On the other hand, a, b, c, and d are internal consistency tests. Some of them are specific to MAXCOV—other procedures have their own unique internal consistency tests—but a and b can be performed with any of the CCK methods. Denotations and connotations of the term "polymer" and its associated building block, termed "monomer", are probed. Soil taxonomy distinguishes between mineral and organic soils. This distinction is not so easily applied in practice, and somewhat complicated rules need to be established.
