Semiautomatic Application

Semiautomatic devices suited for preparative purposes are the CAMAG Linomat 5, the Desaga HPTLC applicator AS 30, and the Alltech TLC sample streaker. For all devices, the syringe has to be filled manually with sample solution and rinsed after sample application. Except for the Alltech TLC sample streaker, each of these instruments can be employed either as software-controlled or as a stand-alone device. The former is more convenient for creation, editing, and saving of the application pattern and instrument parameters. 

The amounts of surface deposits resulting from commercial and experimental applications of DDT and parathion were ascertained on apples, pears, peaches, oranges, and lemons. Applications were made with conventional high pressure spraying equipment, utilizing manually operated guns or semiautomatic booms, and with two types of air blast sprayers. 

Wherever applicable and according to the service provider s best judgement, the user may install a semiautomatic dispenser for the brighteners in the work tank. 

For the most recent LC-MS on the market, an automatic procedure is included in the software package to tune and calibrate in the ESI mode. However, older instruments and/or very specific applications still require manual or semiautomatic procedures to optimize the parameters that affect ion detection. In an LC-MS instrument, the mass spectrometer is tuned and calibrated in three steps (1) ion source and transmission optimization, (2) MS calibration, and (3) fine tuning (detection maximization of one or more particular ions). 

Moisture-Based Adhesives. The thin film of moisture-diluted adhesive applied costs very little per 1000 labels, plus labor costs. Plain paper is most widely applied to glass, but can be applied to metal, particularly in the form of a complete wraparound label. Application can be by hand, semiautomatic, or fully automatic methods. Speeds of 1000 or more per min can be achieved. 

Figure 2 shows the specifically developed small size custom RIM machine for this application, including the metering unit, electrical controls, fixture for the vertical arrangement of the baseball bats to be filled, and also an up and down moving support on which the mixing head is installed. The operation of the machine is semiautomatic. 

Direct compacting. Direct compacting is applied for near-net shaping of parts. This means that the final hardmetal specimen after sintering already has the desired dimensions and only limited surface treatment is necessary afterward. For that purpose, semiautomatic or automatic mechanical or hydraulic presses are used. The pressure application is only from one direction, resulting in a slightly anisotropic density distribution in the green compact. 

In Sections 3.6.2 and 3.6.3 below, we describe the equipment for semiautomatic and automatic application available from three German suppliers. These are (in alphabetical order) Baron, CAMAG and DESAGA, whose addresses are given in Section 12.5.

In semiautomatic application of samples, the time factor is very important, as the operation should sometimes be performed as quickly as possible to prevent unstable materials from decomposing before the actual chromatography. Therefore, sometimes even an extension of the usual pause times, which are often fixed, can be necessary To give begirmers an idea of the time required for semiautomatic application with the Linomat IV, Table 7 gives some typical examples from our own experience, along with the equipment settings. 

Before purchasing equipment for semiautomatic or fully automatic application, it is advisable to test its performance oneself. Good information can also be obtained from congresses such as the Internationale Symposium fiir Planar-Chromatographie which takes place every 2 years in Interlaken (Switzerland) and exhibitions such as InCom, Diisseldorf (annually), Analytica, Munich (every 2 years) and Achema, Frankfurt (every 3 years). 

The form is suitable for development work both before and after writing a new testing procedure, and for testing raw materials and finished products in accordance with a testing procedure that is already to hand. It can be used both for manual application and for application with the aid of the semiautomatic Linomat IV equipment. For other application equipment, appropriately designed forms should be used.

The device delivers the kinetics not in single points but as a continuous exact curve. The continuous injection maintains a steady ligand concentration on the chip throughout the measuring time. Depending on the model, the application of the sample is automatic or at least semiautomatic and is evaluated by computer. In short, he is happy who measures with BIACORE. 

Compression molds can be divided into hand molds, semiautomatic molds, and automatic molds. The design of any of these molds must allow venting to provide for escape of steam, gas, or air produced during the operation. After the initial application of pressure the usual practice is to open the mold slightly to release the gases. This procedure is known as breathing. 

Peel-and-stick labels provide a quick and easy way to apply labels to almost any surface. Die cut and supplied on release papers, they can be printed in computers for addresses, while preprinted labels for an enormous range of applications, particularly difficult substrates such as polyolefins or cold, moist containers make labeling a pleasure compared with traditional wet-applied systems such as dextrines or caseins. Pressure-sensitive label stock provides reliable bonding, is easy to use and virtually instantaneous, and offers a choice of properties, including permanence or easy removal, high-temperature resistance, or low-temperature flexibility. Large or small labels can be easily stored and handled, and applied by hand, hand-held applicators, or semiautomatic or fully automatic industrial labelers.
