Glucocorticoids can cause sodium absorption from the kidney that result in water retention, potassium loss, and increased blood pressure. Cortisol, the primary glucocorticoid, has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antistress effects.

Thromboxane A2 was found to have direct CNS effects on hemodynamic, ACTH, and cortisol responses (Cudd 1998). Whether ginger has a significant effect on these processes and whether it has an antistress or antidepressant effect is speculative, but the eicosanoid activities of ginger and relationship to depression warrant further investigation. 

Brassinosteroids (BSs) represent a new group of plant hormones that possess a broad spectrum of physiological activities (1,2). A most Intriguing property of BSs Is their capacity to Increase stress resistance In plants, but the mechanism of such an antistress activity still remains unknown (1). As cell stress resistance Is usually associated with stress protein synthesis (3 4) our aim was to study the BS effect on protein synthesis and ultrastructure of wheat leaf cells at normal temperature and under heat shock conditions. We have also studied the Influence of BSs on mesophyll cell ultrastructure under saline stress. 

Licorice has shown distinct antifatigue and antistress activity, and in vivo studies have shown strong activity against cancerous tumors and some protection from the effects of radiation. Perhaps it is best known for its estrogenic effects, which make it a useful herb for menopause, and its antiulcer activity, making it an herb of choice for both stomach and duodenal ulceration. Because it stimulates expectoration and is powerfully healing for mucous membrane systems, it has a long history of use for upper respiratory infections. 

The isolated protector also showed reactivative and protective effects in E. coli subjected to heating, ethanol treatment and CdCh (2 mM). The isolation of the individual compound, responsible for die protective and reactivative properties of the AF, opens new ways for imderstanding the mechanism of the antistress action of this protein preparation.
