Dexamethasone is used for the same indications as all corticosteroids however, it exhibits a significantly more powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action. 

Mechanism of Action A mouth agent that has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties. Appears to inhibit formation and/or release of inflammatory mediators (e g., histamine) from mast cells, neutrophils, mononuclear cells. Therapeutic Effect Alleviates signs and symptoms of aphthous ulcers. 

If patients are on anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic drugs, herbal formulas that stimulate the Qi and excite the Yang should not be used. Formulas that contain sweet and sour herbs that can slow down the Qi movement should also be avoided.

Thus, in patients with Addison s disease or other forms of adrenal insufficiency, continuing oral administration of cortisone acetate or fludrocortisone acetate enables salt balance to be restored. Other corticosteriods and analogues that have been used in the hormonal control of sodium levels include aldosterone and deoxycortone acetate. Individual corticosteroids vary in the extent to which they possess the various hormonal activities so that combination therapy is usually required if, for example, mineral balances are to be maintained when corticosteroids are administered for their anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic or anti-allergic properties.

Spanish needles have also been found to have anti-allergy action at the level of mast cells and other allergy mediators.4 Spanish needles contains quercetin and ethyl caffeate, both of which have previously been shown to possess in vitro anti-inflammatory or anti-allergic mediator action.23,24 Quercetin5 has also been shown to stabilize mast cells and basophils, decrease leukotriene formation, and reduce release of histamine and other mediators.24,25 Anti-inflammatory effects have been demonstrated in rats after receiving aqueous extracts of Spanish needles leaves and stems.26,27 A related species, Bidens parviflora, has been reported to inhibit histamine release from rat mast cells in vitro.6 Spanish needles have been shown to inhibit the inflammatory mediator nuclear transcription factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) and its downstream inflammatory mediators in vitro.23... 

Suppression of NF-kappaB has also been observed with a wide variety of phytochemicals found in common spices and food plants.28 It is likely that the clinical anti-allergic action found in this clinical study is due to the combined activity of many phytochemicals in all three botanical ingredients.
