The data in Table 12.5 are the result of a pooling of results from a number of different products that were spot-checked for a number of different residues (drugs, antibiotics, sulfonamides, pesticides, antimicrobials). As can be seen from these limited data, the number of samples is quite small in total but can be reflective of the residue status of various products. Overall, the data indicate a very low incidence of both antibiotic and sulfonamide residues in the imported products.

In the period 1992-1994, the drugs and groups of drugs screened by the National Residue Program included antibiotics, sulfonamides, ivermectin, halofuginone, levamisole, and morantel tartrate. The microbial assays applied by FSIS for monitoring antibiotics could detect chiortetracyciine, oxytetracycline, tetracy-... 

A few violations that occurred in the fiscal years 1993/1994 and 1994/1995 for home-produced commodities concerned residues of antibiotics, sulfonamides, carbadox, nitroimidazoles, and ivermectin (Table 13.24). 

Antimicrobial compounds attracted special attention in this respect. In an early study, Hirsch et al. [55] determined macrolide antibiotics, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, betalactam antibiotics, trimethoprim, and chloramphenicol in different water compartments using LC-ESI-MS-MS. Three different gradient LC methods were developed for the 18 target compounds. Quantitation limits of 50 ng/1 were achieved for tetracyclines and 20 ng/1 for all other compounds after SPE.

The use of medicines as additives in animal nutrition is approved since the 1950s. These non-nutritional additives contain hormones, antibiotics, sulfonamides, nitrofurans, and arsenic compounds. These additives have a very significant effect on the increase in yield of dairy products. 

Observational studies The safety of topical silver sulfadiazine has been reviewed and the adverse effects of the silver and sulfadiazine components discussed [182 ]. Allergic reactions with cross-sensitivity to antibiotic sulfonamides can occur, but there have been no reports of severe allergic reactions. Hemolytic anemia in G6PD-defi-cient patients can occur. Methemoglobinemia occurred in a 3-year-old child with bums and a dominant beta thalassemia trait treated with silver sulfadiazine.
