For convenient automated laboratory assay, two types of Karl Fischer titration are available the classical, volumetric assay and the more sensitive coulometric assay, which is appropriate for samples containing less than 10 mg of water. In the latter, I2 is generated electrolytically at the cell anode, and the amount of water is determined by the current required for electrolysis. Coulometric assays are useful for compounds that are available in only small quantities, such as compounds in early development. [Pg.137]

A serious candidate for transportation application is also the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) which has been realized already on a laboratory scale. A catalytic burner is requited to evaporate the methanol/water mixture and to bum the exhaust gas at the anode [43]. Considering the complete energy chain, a PEFC is by 50 % more efficient than a diesel engine which consumes 4 1 per 100 km this is also valid for a natural gas driven engine [37]. Phosphoric acid anodization was developed by the Boeing Company in the late 1960s and early 1970s to improve the performance of bonded primary structures.(4) Bonds formed with PAA-treated adherends exhibit superior durability during exposure to humid environments compared to those formed with FPL-treated adherends, especially when epoxy adhesives are used. In addition, PA A bonds are less sensitive than FPL bonds to processing variables, such as rinse-water chemistry and time before rinsing. Cadmium plating amounts to about 15% of total cadmium production (see Cadmiumand cadmium alloys). Of the cadmium being plated in 1989, 30% was for automotive parts, over 22% for electronics, and 18% for industrial fasteners. Because of cadmium s high and weU-pubHcized toxicity and very tight waste restrictions, there are considerable efforts to develop alternative materials, and the quantities of cadmium used in electroplating ate expected to decrease. The development of acidity within an occluded cell is by no means a new concept, and it was used by Hoar s as early as 1947 in his Acid Theory of Pitting to explain the pitting of passive metals in solutions containing Cl ions. According to Hoar the Cl ions migrate to the anodic sites and the metal ions at these sites hydrolyse with the formation of HCl, a strong acid that inhibits the formation of a protective film of oxide or hydroxide. Edeleanu and Evans followed the pH changes when aluminium was made anodic in Cl solutions and found that the pH decreased from 8-8 to 5-3. [Pg.162]
