After downstream processing, liquid forms of product, especially enzymes, may not satisfy product quality requirements of biorefinery application or long-term storage. The purpose of formulation is to develop commercially viable products that meet safety, stability, and performance requirements. For instance, robust stable formulations are required in animal feed applications to protect enzymes such as phytase from elevated temperature and moisture during in-feed pelleting processes. 

The essential amino acids content of livestock feed should be monitored, as the lack of limiting amino acids can significantly decrease the feed consumption and cause weight loss. Essential amino acids are commonly used as feed additives at levels of 0.05-0.2%. Such enhancements are required if plant proteins are to maintain their usage level in animal feeding applications. 

Veterinary Applications. Another use for antibiotics is for veterinary appHcations and for animal feed supplements to promote growth in Hvestock (see Feeds and feed additives). Feed antibiotics used in the United States far surpass all other agricultural appHcations in terms of kilogram quantities used and approach quantities used in human medicines (25). In 1980 the USA feed antibiotic usage was estimated to be between five and six million kg. The U.S. Council of Agricultural Science and Technology estimates that feed additives save the U.S. consumer approximately 3500 million per year in meat prices, and antibiotic use accounts for most of this. 

As has been pointed out earlier in this chapter, the dietary consumption and historical medicinal use of carotenoids has been well documented. In the modern age, in addition to crocin, 3.7, and norbixin, 3.8, several carotenoids have become extremely important commercially. These include, in particular, astaxanthin, 3.6 (fish, swine, and poultry feed, and recently human nutritional supplements) lutein, 3.4, and zeaxanthin, 3.3 (animal feed and poultry egg production, human nutritional supplements) and lycopene, 3.2 (human nutritional supplements). The inherent lipophilicity of these compounds has limited their potential applications as hydrophilic additives without significant formulation efforts in the diet, the lipid content of the meal increases the absorption of these nutrients, however, parenteral administration to potentially effective therapeutic levels requires separate formulation that is sometimes ineffective or toxic (Lockwood et al. 2003). 

The Charm Test was initially applied to the analysis of 3-lactam residues in milk although its application to the analysis of body, fluids, meat extracts, and fermentation broths was indicated. There appears to be no rationale why this basic procedure cannot be applied to all types of matrices (water, soil, animal feeds, premixes). ... 

Table 6.1 summarizes the uses of salt. Nearly half is consumed in the important electrolysis of brine to form two top 50 chemicals, sodium hydroxide and chlorine. One fourth is used on highways for deicing and competes with calcium chloride in this application. The food industry and animal feeds make up other important uses. Salt is surpassed only by phosphate rock in total production of all minerals. Its annual production is nearly 90 billion lb. 

Cobalt(II) acetate is used for bleaching and drying varnishes and laquers. Other applications are as a foam stahihzer for beverages in sympathetic inks as a mineral supplement in animal feed and as a catalyst for oxidation. It also is used in aluminum anodizing solutions.
