Since the analytical results may be considered evidence as well, it is important to use a qualified lab for analytical support. The precursor model of FAB applies well to ionic analytes and samples that are easily converted to ionic species within the liquid matrix, e.g., by protonation or deprotonation or due to cationization. Those preformed ions would simply have to be desorbed into the gas phase (Fig. 9.6). The promoting effect of decreasing pH (added acid) on [M+H] ion yield of porphyrins and other analytes supports the precursor ion model. [55,56] The relative intensities of [Mh-H] ions in FAB spectra of aliphatic amine mixtures also do not depend on the partial pressure of the amines in the gas phase, but are sensitive on the acidity of the matrix. [57] Furthermore, incomplete desolvation of preformed ions nicely explains the observation of matrix (Ma) adducts such as [M+Ma+H] ions. The precursor model bears some similarities to ion evaporation in field desorption (Chap. 8.5.1).

The exposure to effect-level concentration ratio for AS yields a protection factor of >27 for C14AS. Because of the rapid AS biodegradation observed in natural water and toxicity amelioration or attenuation resulting from sorption to solids, this safety factor is expected to be conservative. Additional C14AS chronic-toxicity studies with full analytical support to confirm exposure concentrations are suggested to validate the safety of C14AS in the aquatic environment.

Strong analytical support for the presence of the phenylcoumaran system (I) in lignin was obtained a few years ago (5) (Figure 1). Procedurally the R D Manager will have to decide, after consulting the relevant staff, what analytical support will be required for each project in the portfolio for the coming period. Following discussions with the analytical services manager, the cost and availability of in house provision can be determined. Analytical services should be able to provide advice on where to get the most economical external provision of non-available analytical support. 

The R D Manager must ensure that the cost for the analytical support is in the budget for each project. Monitoring the cost and the use of analytical services is an essential task in budgetary control as it is easy for an R D team to run into overspend rapidly. It helps if data is provided to team leaders and chemists on the cost of the methods available in the analytical services group or from the outsourcing agency. 

The methodology used to decide which projects should make up the annual plan, the targets for R D, is described in Section D. The annual plans for technical service or analytical support will normally be drawn up to match the requirements of the projects in the R D plan, with additional items covering business and manufacturing support... 

Support Facilities. For example, a quantification of the cost of analytical support and other testing, such as HSE evaluation is made by the Project Manager. Any special work requiring additional development costs also needs to be identified. 

The study should address the presence or absence of analytical supporting data (i.e., is the toxicity value based on nominal or measured concentrations ). 

ET-AAS with graphite furnace tubes constituted the analytical support for the speciation analysis of Al and the concomitant determination of Al (III) in tea infusions, as described by Alberti and coworkers [141], Lvov platforms incorporated into the graphite furnace atomizers enabled the authors to attain an LoD of 2 xg l-1 Al. The determination was not impaired by the relatively high solid contents. Adsorption of Al on ion Chelex-100 resin was employed to estimate the free metal content and the concentration and stability constants of complexed Al species. The metal is reported to be present in total concentrations from 0.09 to 0.26 mM, but mainly linked to strong complexes. Strong complexation is demonstrated by the inability of Chelex-100 to dissociate the complexes. These results are considered by the authors as an explanation of the low toxicity of the Al associated with tea infusions. The concentration of free Al was found to be very low (at the nM level). No structural or chemical information about the ligands was obtained from the method.
