In detergent perfumes, the stabiUty of vanillin is not always certain. It depends on the association made with other raw materials, eg, with patchouli, frankincense, cloves, most of the animal notes, and such chemicals as amyl saUcylate, methyl ionones, heflotropin, gamma undecalactone, linalool, methyl anthrarulate, benzyl acetate, phenyl ethyl alcohol, cedar wood derivatives, oak mosses, coumarin, benzoin. Substantivity refers to the ability of a perfume or a perfume material, applied in a diluted dispersion in water, to attach itself to a solid surface such as the skin (in the case of toilet soap and bath and shower products), the hair (in shampoos and conditioners), or textile fibers (in detergents and fabric softeners). Ci2H10O, Mr 170.21, 6pi.7kPa 171-173 °C, df 1.171, ng° 1.6752, has been identified in some essential oils. It smells like orange blossom and is a colorless crystalline solid (mp 56 °C). It is usually prepared by Friedel-Crafts acetylation of naphthalene (with acetyl chloride, acetic anhydride, etc.) in the presence of aluminum chloride. In polar solvents (e.g., nitrobenzene), the percentage of the simultaneously formed a isomer is lower. Methyl P-naphthyl ketone is used in eau de cologne, soap perfumes, and detergents.
