Thymus mastichina

Spanish marjoram oil is distilled from Thymus mastichina L., a wild plant growing in Spain. The oil is a slightly yellow liquid with a fresh camphoraceous odor. Its main constituent is 1,8-cineole (up to 65%). [Pg.204]

Marjoram Oil, Spanish Type, occurs as a slightly yellow liquid with a camphoraceous note. It is a volatile oil obtained by steam distillation from the flowering plant Thymus mastichina L. (Fam. Labiatae). It is soluble in most fixed oils, but it is insoluble in glycerin, in propylene glycol, and in mineral oil. [Pg.279]

It has been found that the total amount of fragrance compounds obtained by superheated water extrachon was greater than that that could be obtained by steam dishllahon. This could be because penetradon of the plant material is better with hot water under pressure, as proposed above. As an example of these comparisons, the work on wild marjoram Thymus mastichina) [60] will be briefly outlined. Steam dishllahon was carried out over 3 h, whereas superheated water extrachon at 150°C was completed in 15 min. The authors used about 10.5 hmes more water per gram of plant material in superheated water extrachon than in steam dishlla-... [Pg.332]

CompositionMain components are the sabinenes (see thujenes) (ca. 5%), a- (5-10%) and y-terpinenes (seep-menthadienes) (10-15%), cis-sabwewe Aydrate (see thujanoles) (10-15%), and terpinen-4-ol (see p-menthenols) (20-30%) the latter two compounds are mainly responsible for the organoleptic properties of sweet marjoram oil. The (genuine) oil should not be confused with the so-called Spanish oil obtained from Thymus mastichina which contains between 40 and 70%, - cineole. [Pg.383]

This species is related to Thymus hirtus W. and Thymus vulgaris L., and has been placed by Boissier under Thymus mastichina L., and by Pourret under Thymus sparsifolius, var. hyemalis, but by J. Lange it is considered to be a distinct species. Its heath-like habit of growth is, at all events, very distinctive, as well as the small heads of flowers, each of which is nearly stalkless. [Pg.266]
