Amphoteric components

Wool has a complex chemical stmcture, composed mainly of a large number of different proteins (87). It is amphoteric in character because of the presence of basic amino and acidic carboxyl groups in the side chains of some of the component amino acids. In an aqueous acidic dyebath, protonation of the amino and carboxyl groups results in a net positive charge on the fiber. [Pg.347]

Isolation. Isolation procedures rely primarily on solubiHty, adsorption, and ionic characteristics of the P-lactam antibiotic to separate it from the large number of other components present in the fermentation mixture. The penicillins ate monobasic catboxyHc acids which lend themselves to solvent extraction techniques (154). Pencillin V, because of its improved acid stabiHty over other penicillins, can be precipitated dkecdy from broth filtrates by addition of dilute sulfuric acid (154,156). The separation process for cephalosporin C is more complex because the amphoteric nature of cephalosporin C precludes dkect extraction into organic solvents. This antibiotic is isolated through the use of a combination of ion-exchange and precipitation procedures (157). The use of neutral, macroporous resins such as XAD-2 or XAD-4, allows for a more rapid elimination of impurities in the initial steps of the isolation (158). Anionic and cationic products generally tend to interact with each other, usually diminishing the surface-active properties of both and often resulting in precipitation of the complex formed. The polymerized ionic liquid (IL) shows great promise for diverse applications. Some polymerization methods have already been oriented toward specific applications. Polymerized ILs are useful in polar environments or where there are ion species for transport in the matrix. Amphoteric polymers that contain no carrier ions are being considered for several porposes in polymer electrolytes. Zwitterionic liquids (ZBLs) were introduced in Chapter 20 as ILs in which component ions cannot move with the potential gradient. ZILs can provide ion conductive paths upon addition of salt to the matrix. It is therefore possible to realize selective ion transport in an IL matrix. If the resulting matrix can form solid film over a wide temperature range, many useful ionic devices can be realized.
