Palladium -catalyzed

Palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions of organic halides with olefins or dienes (R. F. Heck, 1979) are broad in scope and simple to carry out. Anhydrous conditions or any special technique are not required and most functional groups are tolerated. [Pg.42]

Palladium catalyzed cycloisomerizations of 6-cn-l-ynes lead most readily to five-membered rings. Palladium binds exclusively to terminal C = C triple bonds in the presence of internal ones and induces cyclizations with high chemoselectivity. Synthetically useful bis-exocyclic 1,3-dienes have been obtained in high yields, which can, for example, be applied in Diels-Alder reactions (B.M. Trost, 1989). [Pg.84]

The benzyl group has been widely used for the protection of hydroxyl functions in carbohydrate and nucleotide chemistry (C.M. McCloskey, 1957 C.B. Reese, 1965 B.E. Griffin, 1966). A common benzylation procedure involves heating with neat benzyl chloride and strong bases. A milder procedure is the reaction in DMF solution at room temperatiue with the aid of silver oxide (E. Reinefeld, 1971). Benzyl ethers are not affected by hydroxides and are stable towards oxidants (e.g. periodate, lead tetraacetate), LiAIH, amd weak acids. They are, however, readily cleaved in neutral solution at room temperature by palladium-catalyzed bydrogenolysis (S. Tejima, 1963) or by sodium in liquid ammonia or alcohols (E.J. The alkaloid dubamine contains a single bond between the two heteroarene units. This lond was formed in 79% yield by the generally valuable palladium-catalyzed eoupling of an ryltrimethylstannane with an aryl triflate (see section 1.6). The requisite stannane was pre-ared from l,3-benzodioxol-5-yl triflate and hexamethyldistannane with the same palladium atalyst, the triflate ester was obtained from 2(1 f/)-quinolinone and trifluoromethanesulfonic jihydride (A.M. Echavarren, 1987). An earlier attempt to perform this aryl coupling by dassical means gave a yield of only 1 %. [Pg.295]

The 5-oxohexanal 27 is prepared by the following three-step procedure (1) 1,2-addition of allylmagnesium bromide to an a, / -unsaturated aldehyde to give the 3-hydroxy-1,5-diene 25, (2) oxy-Cope rearrangement of 25 to give 26, and (3) palladium catalyzed oxidation to afford 27. Oxidative Carbonylation of Ethylene—Elimination of Alcohol from p-Alkoxypropionates. Spectacular progress in the 1970s led to the rapid development of organotransition-metal chemistry, particularly to catalyze olefin reactions (93,94). A number of patents have been issued (28,95—97) for the oxidative carbonylation of ethylene to provide acryUc acid and esters. The procedure is based on the palladium catalyzed carbonylation of ethylene in the Hquid phase at temperatures of 50—200°C. Esters are formed when alcohols are included. A low temperature catalytic process has been reported (64). The process involves the divalent nickel- or zero-valent palladium-catalyzed self-condensation of halothiophenols in an alcohol solvent. The preferred halothiophenol is -bromothiophenol. The relatively poor solubiHty of PPS under the mild reaction conditions results in the synthesis of only low molecular weight PPS. The Boekelheide reaction has been applied to the synthesis of non-natural products with the preparation of quaterpyridines serving as an example. The sequence began with the 2,4-linked bipyridyl-N-oxide 25. Execution under the typical reaction conditions produced the expected bis-pyridone 26.
