Austria. The Statistische Nachrichten (3), issued monthly, gives statistics on population, labor conditions, production, foreign trade, and wholesale prices. Production figures are given for caustic soda, chlorine, carbon dioxide, calcium carbide, lime-ammonium nitrate, acetylene (dissolved), oxygen, soda crystals, soaps and detergents, cellulose, rayon, and magnesite. 

Ammonium nitrate is the most important fertilizer in the world (see p. 96). It ranked fifteenth among the industrial chemicals produced in the United States in 1995 (8 million tons). Unfortunately, it is also a powerful explosive. In 1 947 an explosion occurred aboard a ship being loaded with the fertilizer in Texas. The fertilizer was in paper bags and apparently blew up after sailors tried to stop a fire in the ship s hold by closing a hatch, thereby creating the compression and heat necessary for an explosion. More than six hundred people died as a result of the accident. More recent disasters involving ammonium nitrate took place at the World Trade Center in New York City in 1993 and at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995.

Use of a 64% solution of ammonium nitrate as a binder for coating micronutrients on bulk blends has been described [24]. Over 97% adherence was obtained. The use of liquid fertilizers as a binder was patented [25], and the process - trade named Micro-Charger - may still be in commercial use. 

The crude trinitrotoluene is worked up by washing with water and soda solution or with sodium sulfite solution to remove the less stable asymmetric isomers which lower the crystallizing point of 2,4,6-TNT. The electron-withdrawing effect of the nitro groups of the asymmetric isomers facilitates nucleophilic substitution by OH or HSO3 groups, even at ambient temperature, so that the reaction products are water-soluble. The crystallizing point of the purified TNT should be at least 80.6 °C. When mixed with 20% aluminum, TNT is marketed under the trade name Tritonal , and when mixed with 50% ammonium nitrate, it is sold under the trade name Amatol . 

ANFO is a high explosive made from Ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. This is the type of explosive Timothy McVeigh used to attack the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City or April 19,1995. It is composed of ammonium nitrate and 6% fuel oil. A similar mixture of urea nitrate and other materials was used in the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. 

Ammonium nitrate lime (21-26% N). This granular fertiliser is a mixture of ammonium nitrate and lime. It is sold under various trade names. Because of the calcium carbonate present it does not cause acidity when added to the soil.

A number of products are being marketed under the trade name POLYON. These include coated basic fertilizer materials, ie, urea, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, potassium chloride, ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, and iron sulfate, in various particle sizes.
