Infrared noncontact thermal sensors are classified as infrared radiation thermometers by the American Society for Test and Measurement (ASTM) even though they don t always read out in temperature. The laws of physics allow us to convert IR radiation measurements to temperature measurements. We do this by measuring the self-emitted radiation in the IR portion of the electromagnetic spectmm from target surfaces and converting these measurements to electrical signals. In making these measurements three sets of characteristics need to be considered, as illustrated in Fig. 2.6 ... 

One problem associated with discussing flame retardants is the lack of a clear, uniform definition of flammabiHty. Hence, no clear, uniform definition of decreased flammabiHty exists. The latest American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) compilation of fire tests Hsts over one hundred methods for assessing the flammabiHty of materials (2). These range in severity from small-scale measures of the ignitabiHty of a material to actual testing in a full-scale fire. Several of the most common tests used on plastics are summarized in Table 1.

The surface burning characteristics (flame spread index and smoke developed index) for wood and wood products as measured by American Society for Testing and Materials (44) can be reduced with fire retardant treatments, either chemical impregnation or coatings (48). Fire retardant treatments also reduce the heat release rate of a burning piece of wood (49,50). The heat release rates (51) of the burning materials are an important factor in fire growth.

Physical Properties The free-swelling index (FSl) measures the tendency of a coal to swell when burned or gasified in fixed or fluidized beds. Coals with a high FSl (greater than 4) can usually be expected to cause difficulties in such beds. Detads of the test are given by the ASTM D 720 (American Society for Testing and Materials, op. cit.) and U.S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3989. 

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has introduced a number of test methods relating to protective clothing. For example, the ASTM F23 Committee on Protective Clothing has devised protocols for measuring chemical resistance of materials. There are not however, any comprehensive standards which list a minimum number of tests or chemicals to evaluate materials.
