Surface burning characteristics

Building code requirements for fire performance are mainly concerned with noncombustibiUty (41), fire endurance (42,43), and surface burning characteristics (44). Wood, even in its treated form, does not meet the building code requirements for a noncombustible material. However, for some specific apphcations where noncombustible materials are required, the codes permit the substitution of fire retardant treated wood. [Pg.329]

The surface burning characteristics (flame spread index and smoke developed index) for wood and wood products as measured by American Society for Testing and Materials (44) can be reduced with fire retardant treatments, either chemical impregnation or coatings (48). Fire retardant treatments also reduce the heat release rate of a burning piece of wood (49,50). The heat release rates (51) of the burning materials are an important factor in fire growth. [Pg.329]

ANSI/ASTM E 84-79a - method of test for surface burning characteristics of building materials (Steiner tunnel). A 24-foot-long specimen is held horizontally as the roof of a 25-foot-long chamber. The ignition source is two gas burners, applied to the underside of one end. Flame spread is measured visually and instruments are used to determine fuel contribution and smoke density. The test is identical with UL 723 and ULC-S 102 1978, used in Canadian Building Regulations. [Pg.290]

Ratings for flame spread of interior finish materials have been established with the use of the 25-ft (7.6-m) tunnel developed by A. J. Steiner at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. and defined in NFPA 255, Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. These ratings are used in NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, and in other codes to indicate the area in which finishes... [Pg.346]

Elastomeric closed-cell materials are the fourth type and are used primarily in plumbing and refrigeration work. These products are both flexible and closed-cell, permitting rapid installation without an additional vapor retarder lagging for moderate design conditions. These materials have a surface burning characteristic of 25/50 FHC only for thicknesses 0.75 in (1.9 cm) and below this restricts their nse in certain applications. [Pg.783]

The filters are available in various listings from recognized testing laboratories. Underwriters Laboratory will list the filters in many ways. Any or all of the components may be listed separately when tested in accordance with the UL test for surface burning characteristics of Building Materials (UL 723). This is the least desirable listing because it does not test all the components in the manner in which they are being used. [Pg.390]
